'Any car company that’s not paying attention to them as a competitor is going to be lost when they hit their market. BYD’s entry into the U.S. market isn’t an if. It's a when....'
The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China, but drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. A shorter-range version costs under $10,000.

The company isn’t selling cars in the U.S., largely due to 27.5% tariffs on the sale price of Chinese vehicles when they arrive at ports. Donald Trump slapped on the bulk of the tariff, 25%, when he was president, and it was kept in place under Joe Biden. Trump contends that the rise of EVs backed by Biden will cost U.S. factory jobs, sending the work to China.
Yes. In the New Economic Model, a range of 250 km should be plenty. And you will be allowed to charge up once a week, assuming the grid is up that week.
I would like the same thing for a pick-up truck. A bare bones truck, nothing fancy, but affordable and reliable. I do not need power mirrors, front/rear cameras, etc. Just 4 wheel drive V-8, cruise control, radio, heater & air conditioner.
Bet a lot of them would sell, especially on the used market for younger drivers who don’t have a lot of money.

The modern Corvette may be the single greatest mass produced vehicle in US history.
The country is also the leader in pick up trucks and SUVs.
It took the Japanese decades to come up with an attractive vehicle plus a fuel embargo to proceed past the foot in the door stage.
Will it come with instructions? Have they learned HOW to write instructions/directions in the past 50-70 years for assembling anything MADE IN CHINA? If not, I think they should start there first!

Hey, Thanks.
Takes me back to a happier time.
Great time.....thanks.
BYD and quality can not be used in the same reference. There are thousands and thousands of this junk sitting in lots all over China which are not sold and cannot be sold.
Brilliant idea #89. Export the junk to the US.
Does it have unlimited range?

Yes - it will easily circle the parking lot, going beyond the lot, you will need to charge it up & make sure the wipers and heater work after you leave the lot, else you will need another charge.
“Woychowski says its top speed is limited to 81 mph.”
The speed limit on my local interstate is 80 mph.
It’s easy to cruise @ 84 mph with no risk of being stopped.
"Bad" is a quality ...
Those cars look to have a longer wheelbase.

So like everything from Detroit, then ?

This EV comes off as little more than a well-appointed glorified golf cart under real world conditions, due to range limitations. The concern expressed by auto execs is likely to do with what they fear might be coming down the pike rather than what’s currently being sold. And this make, BYD, is best of breed, a company on which Warren Buffett chose to wager a few bucks.
Note that Munger sold while pumping Chinese stocks - a classic case of talking your book. Given that the Berkshire philosophy is to hold forever - and it still holds Apple shares it acquired a while back - that’s not a vote of confidence for Chinese EV companies. And BYD is the leader of the pack.
