A team of researchers has found evidence that daily consumption of olive oil may reduce the chances of developing dementia.
In their study, the group analyzed data for thousands of people included in two separate health databases and found that those people who consumed at least 7 g of olive oil daily were less likely to die from dementia-related ailments.
Prior research has suggested that following the Mediterranean diet can lead to healthier outcomes for most people. The diet tends to stress consuming legumes, vegetables, nuts, fish, dairy and olive oil. In this new study, the research team found evidence that the heavy use of olive oil in such diets may be one of its most significant factors.
To learn more about possible health benefits of regularly consuming olive oil, the researchers studied patient data for more than 60,000 women included in the Nurses' Health Study and more than 31,000 men included in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Both databases include historical information, following patients for up to 30 years. They also include data regarding cause of death.
The researchers found that 4,751 of the 92,383 patients listed in the two databases had died from dementia-related causes. In comparing diet information, they found that those who had consumed at least a half-teaspoon of olive oil per day over the course of the study years were 28% less likely to have died from diseases related to the development of dementia.
The team suggests that consumption of a Mediterranean diet, with a strong emphasis on olive oil, may reduce the chances of developing dementia by inhibiting inflammation caused by other factors.

The write up does not say it, but this should probably be considered an association, rather than proof.
My memory has gotten significantly worse over the last year. I can attribute some of that to stress, but my mother died of Alzheimer’s, so I’ve started taking several supplements that are supposed to help protect from it. I think I’ll start consuming some olive oil each day.
I hope and pray that it’s not Alzheimers.
I use a lot of extra virgin olive oil daily, pour it on frying pan to cook chicken thighs. I am not sure that it keeps its great qualities if its heated too much. Also use it on potatoes with garlic granules sprinkled on top. I don’t even own a salt shaker, salt is bad for the heart.
Now that I’m 90, guess it wouldn’t hurt to introduce olive oil to my diet, as a supplement...
Of course my wife cooks with olive oil plus uses it on her salads...
We pay a small fortune for the imported oil she uses, so maybe I can sneak some of it into a protein shake...
or avocado oil

All the best to you. Someone can prove me wrong about this, there are no bad olive oils unless they are rancid. Half and half blends- half olive oil and half some other oil. And the expensive ones. Can’t afford those. Any that are
“first cold pressed” are good. I’m going to start taking it every day, as well.
You might want to only cook with avacado oil to avoid the smoke. We went through much more olive oil when used for cooking as it ended up in the oven exhaust.
Moderate aerobic activity (like swimming) is reported to reduce the risk of alzheimers by 45 percent while also improving mood.
Exercise in general reduces dementia/alzheimers. Its the use of the brain requiring multiple centers of coordination that are helpful to brain health.
My ex mother-in-law has dementia right now. it’s a hard thing to watch.
My Dad is in a care home with dementia for the last year.

Was there not another study last week on FR that showed the same results, or was it one in the same? Seems the study posted last week showed olive oil helped women and less so men in reducing dementia.
Having said that, I found some taste test results for various olive oils and Aldi’s house brand “Specialy Selected” Sicilian EVO olive oil is highly rated for both cooking and dipping/salad dressings and affordable ($8.99 for 16.9oz.) We are about to crack open a bottle.
Too much salt is bad for the heart. We actually require salt, but you probably already know that. In some parts of the world, salt was like gold. Just be sure you’re getting enough in your diet and no more.
I pray that Alzheimer’s is just a concern and not the reality.

It also contains coffee berry extract, which is supposed to be really great for memory problems. I also take turmeric curcurmin and a multi vitamin. I’m going to take Omega3, as well. I’ve started taking some other supplements, too. I’m diabetic, and have been taking berberine. It has kept my blood sugar in normal range.

So you’re saying I need to switch to EVOO on my toast for my morning breakfast sandwich, and eschew the grass fed cow butter?
