A new study shows that employers are less likely to call back applicants with Black-sounding names than those with white-sounding ones.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago recently filed 83,000 fake job applications for 11,000 entry-level positions at multiple Fortune 500 companies with names like Brad, Greg, Darnell, Lamar, Amanda, Kristen, Ebony and Latoya.
The study, “A Discrimination Report Card,” found that the white-sounding applicant names were favored up to 24 percent more than the likely Black applicants.
“It’s of course upsetting and discouraging that in the year 2023 and so on that this phenomenon persists and can be at the level that it can be detected with an experiment like ours,” Evan K. Rose, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the report, said.
The 2021 study built upon research from a 2003 study, which found that applicants with names that sounded white got 50 percent more callbacks than those whose names sounded Black.
The new report also found that the percentage of discrimination varied among industries and went onto name companies with the worst rates. Auto dealers and car part retailers were the least likely to call back Black applicants.

I’d tell someone that NO ONE gives 100%. A running coach told me once a runner gave 100% if they collapsed at the finish line and needed to be carried to a hospital! “Anything less, and it wasn’t 100%!”
So a boss who says 110% is the minimum is a boss who is just blowing smoke up your butt, OR someone with low standards!
Maybe there are other factors why they didn’t get the job?

It’s the content of the resume, not the color of the name. Unless the employer is deliberately trying to fill a quota, the hiring manager usually has a habit of trying to hire the most qualified applicant at the right compensation.
Now do hippie names. You name your kid “Morningstar” and she (or he) will be less likely to get callbacks. Same thing if you give your kids Satanic names. Same thing for the kid whose parents named him “Adolf Hitler.” That’s the way it is.
Makes it more interesting to pllay spot the white guy.
It’s not “black-sounding” vs. “whote-sounding”.
It’s NORMAL vs. MADE-UP. Single continuous words vs. double or apostrophe-ridden words.
Of course, I’m sick of whites with pretentious names. Most notably so-called “Irish” names and last names as first.
I want normalcy again. My son has a good solid Anglo-Saxon FIRST name. (My own name is a bit unusual.)

How long have blacks (NOT CAPITALIZED) been doing this stupid nonsense, does she think? (BTW, it’s parallel to whites using Irish and last names.)
Let me tell you, 100 years ago blacks were normal. Normal names.
And I can’t think of any blacks in my generation in school who had weird names. Well, my good friend in high school did, but her older sister had a normal name. Our neighbors who were Ethiopian had curious names, but that’s understandable.
So, this isn’t “persisting”. It’s a newer trend.
And what about Asian names? Muh Chih Yang vs Melissa Yang?
White ethnic names? Apollonia Demetreou? Ute Graber? Basia Wlodkowsi? Would they really do worse than Denise Washington?
Who ever thought being named LaDrano would keep you from a 6 figure job?

Is the percentage of white people calling black owned businesses higher than the percentage of black people calling white owned businesses?
