Gen Z employee ignites a FURIOUS debate after telling their new boss they couldn't attend an 8AM meeting because they 'had a workout class' - prompting outrage from older workers... so, who do YOU think is right?

A Gen Z employee has sparked furious debate after telling their boss that they couldn't attend an 8 a.m. meeting because they had a 'workout class.'

TikTok users have fired off at the hosts of the podcast Demoted, Natalie Marie and Ross Pomerantz, after they shared their reaction to an email they received from a listener claiming their Gen Z employer refused to attend an 8 a.m. meeting because it conflicted with their 'workout class.'

The hosts' response to the email ignited a fiery conversation as people on the web argued about work-life balance.

And, one Gen Z TikTok creator added fuel to the fire when he put himself in the shoes of the employee and questioned if his denial to attend meetings outside of his work hours should be something he was reprimanded for.

The debate began when a now-deleted clip of the podcast hosts discussing the topic went viral.

In the video, Natalie reads off an email she received from a listener.

In the email, the listener asked whether it should be 'allowed' for their 'Gen Z new hire' to refuse to show up to an early morning meeting because they had a workout class.

Natalie then chimed in with her own reaction. She said: 'You just started this job. I don't give a flying s*** about your workout class. Also an 8 a.m. workout class is too late. Work out at six, maybe seven.'

Meanwhile, Ross noted that the employee's response made him 'angry.'

He said: 'My visceral reaction was are you f***ing kidding me? My hand's shaking, and it's not from the caffeine.'

Both of the podcast hosts noted that while mental health was important, 'personal time' shouldn't interfere with work.

And when the ‘Boss’ is constantly griping that he can’t find or retain employees, I’ll be laughing my butt off.

It’s always the jerks who think they are doing the employees some immense favor that are also whining that they “Can’t find anyone willing to work”.

I know the general consensus is every older generation complains about the younger generations but I’m seeing millennials complaining about how different Y and Z are from them and not that much time has passed between the 2. There is a huge drop off in work ethic from say generation x to Generation Y. I have my own business and I do not hire anyone from the younger generations. I can narrow it down even more. I know 3 landscaping businesses that have gone away from hiring male central or South American workers because they have grown quite lazy and they complain way too much. The women on the other hand, they work very hard and do not complain. There are groups you do not hire and others who work out quite well.

When I was in the Army, it annoyed me to NO END that those that smoked (almost everyone did back then) got a good 10-15 minute ‘break’ pretty much on the hour to go have a smoke.

When they left to go smoke, I’d pull out a book and read.

When my Sergeant confronted me on it, I told him I didn’t smoke and that I would take my 10-15 minute BREAK PER HOUR to read, instead.

Amazingly, he didn’t put me on KP for a month, though he did tell me it would be easier for him if I just started smoking, LOL!

I know a few financial companies in the Manhattan area. All the owners made it clear what demographics to never hire. These companies were eventually sold for fantastic sums and none could have made it with the usual diversity crowd.

A meeting 4 hours away calls for exactly what you’re asking for; travel expenses, per diem, and an overnight stay the night before. Plus the lost productivity of four more hours of return travel after the meeting.

... conference call at 5am or 11pm, sometimes on the same day

Yeah, those were the days. I don't miss that at all.

> *NOBODY* owes any employer a single thing except to work in an ethical and productive manner while on the clock. <

Right. And there’s another thing every organization must consider: morale. Sure, a boss can call a meeting at 8 AM or at 5 AM. And he can use all sorts of threats to ensure attendance.

But the loss in employee morale would hardly balance out what would be gained from such a meeting. Win the battle. Lose the war.

I worked for a real ass once. He called me into his office one day to announce that he was unilaterally changing my agreed-upon 9 am start time to 8:30, which he knew would be a bit challenging for me due to my commute. He then “helpfully” suggested that if it was too hard for me to make it in by 8:30, there was an alternative - I could come in at 8:00.

I started working on my exit that day and was gone in a matter of weeks. I still regret that I did not quit on the spot.

I’m of the older generation who is horrified by the Gen Z work ethic. But there probably is more utility and productivity by the kid going to a workout class than going to yet another useless meeting.

It is terrible journalism, I agree!

My husband has over 100 employees. He is super flexible on time off, and they have a lot of say as to what hours they work. But he does expect employees to be there during their chosen shift and missing 2-3 shifts without a legit reason will get them fired. He does not expect them to come in outside of their shift. Period. He might ask them but it would a favor to him.

He has very little turnover, some folks have been with him for decades, but most employees are 20s and 30s. They love working for him and are incredibly productive. Respect really goes both ways.

The organization I was with in the Air Force had recently moved from Washington DC to a base in Montgomery AL. To stay in sync with AF headquarters, the organization's working hours were 7-4, to correspond with the Pentagon's 8-5.

It could have been worse, I suppose. They could have moved to a base in California. ;-)

fortunately my industry (auto recycling) does not really attract them.

I do get them from time to time applying at my car lot, but other than detailing/car chaser (auction and back) and jobs that can be done “whenever” during the day there is not much that fits with them. I give them credit for trying to hold a job though. a single mom is the easiest person to get welfare.

As a military person going to boot camp in 1977, the idea of missing that first “workout class” is very personal to me. My drill sergeants were very cooperative with me in making sure I had that “me” time. (SARCCCCCC)

I know we’re being invited to jump all over the Gen Z employee here.

Meh. Sorry. I just have no sympathy for companies. If they’re not paying her a great salary or giving her a great pathway to promotion, I can fully understand her refusing. I used to be salaried and I consciously chose to become a contractor paid hourly. Companies can’t abuse my time anymore. They get a set amount of time and if they want to demand more they have to pay more. Gone are the days when I was salaried and was working 75-80 hours a week....and yes, I did that.

If they want more from her, pay her. Otherwise they have to decide if they want to keep her around and she gets to decide if she wants to stay. I give companies fair work for the time they contracted for. They can demand more but they’re not going to get that unless they pay up.

“Trying hiring a single mom.”

I worked WITH moms, both single and married, for 30 years. Besides doing the things you listed, they were forever taking kids to the doctor (allegedly), or staying home because kids were (allegedly) sick.

We childless did double duty about 25% of the time to pick up the slack for those others. Our pay didn’t increase; their pay didn’t decrease.
