Consumers should anticipate two major alterations to their shopping experience in the coming year, an expert has warned.
A consumer specialist is forecasting a grim conclusion for two contentious supermarket policies that could reshape shoppers’ habits.
Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert has projected retail tendencies for a quarter of a century, and his recent predictions might come as good news to some shoppers.
In a conversation with The U.S. Sun, the expert explained that security concerns and consumer preferences may be the main drivers of these changes.
“From a security standpoint, what’s happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees, whether it’s security or other employees to help people at self-checkout.
“So, you know you’re not accomplishing anything. You’re not reducing labour, you’re not getting a better shopping experience.”

A single line to multiple service points ALWAYS provides a lower average line wait time per customer. Why everybody doesn’t use this method is beyond me.
I did a stint for att UVerse after the 2008 crash. Tier II Member Care. First the customers members got the bot, then the Philippino, then when they were good and angry they got me.
Mrs. Chandler made me quit. She said the job was affecting my personality, and not in a good way.
The queue. So much better, especially when shoppers clog a checkout line with paper coupons.
i usually use self check out. i don’t mind now but was not a fan in the beginning.
Do even know what a “Gen X’er” is? Can you comprehend how stupid you sound from that comment?
I shop at Fry’s (Kroger). I go online with a desktop comp and click on the digital coupons before shopping.
Many places do this, LL Bean comes to mind, it's the most efficient method.
I’ve already corrected my miscommunication. Do you know how stupid you sound calling me stupid?
Scanning the item at its shelf priced location also is ab advantage to see if there is an error.
I LOVE self checkout. I am a DIY guy for everything. I don’t have to deal with PEOPLE at checkout.
EVERYTHING (now) has a barcode. Even most produce, but you can always look it up.
I refuse to pay for their POS bags. It’s easy, just put the stuff back into your cart. (I keep the reusable bags in my car).
I ALWAYS use a credit card and can even get cash back if I want to. (Who uses “cash” anymore).
I don’t trust cashiers. They make mistakes and can STEAL!
I hope self check out is here to stay.
Fareway in Iowa does that. They will push the cart to your vehicle and load the groceries into your trunk.
I generally don’t mind self checkout. Biggest issue is produce where you have to determine which of the 14 kinds of yellow onions you have from a picture list where they all look the same.
I was with a friend at Aldi a couple days before Christmas. Went early in the day hoping to beat the crowd. Nope. Got our few items (maybe 12 or 15) then went to the self checkout. He accidentally scanned the hamburger buns twice. Looking around at the throng of people and no available employees, I just told him to grab something else of similar cost and thrown it into the bag without scanning.
Not worth their time or ours to correct something for just a few cents either way.
Isn’t the employ scanning on exit just the same as a checkout? My daughter and her husband are BJ’s members so I can ask them.
I’m glad I am still young enough to take my groceries to my car
The self-checkouts have cameras and AI to check for that
Roche Brothers in MA does .
…
Damn straight. I do NOT work for the store. If you want me to do your work, then pay me. At least, give a 2-3% discount.
That was a poster child for theft.
ya I was going to say I actually preferred self check out... dont know what the beef is against it unless there is a lot of theft...
There are zero cashiers at the Lowe’s near my house. It’s all self checkout. I have no choice, so now I go to ACE Hardware. It’s a bit further, and a little more expensive, but I know the manager and all the kids working there after only a couple of months. Market Capitalism. I still hope self checkout goes away. I liked talking to the cashiers.
