'Self-checkout is doomed': Major supermarkets to scrap technology in huge overhaul

Consumers should anticipate two major alterations to their shopping experience in the coming year, an expert has warned.

A consumer specialist is forecasting a grim conclusion for two contentious supermarket policies that could reshape shoppers’ habits.

Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert has projected retail tendencies for a quarter of a century, and his recent predictions might come as good news to some shoppers.

In a conversation with The U.S. Sun, the expert explained that security concerns and consumer preferences may be the main drivers of these changes.

“From a security standpoint, what’s happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees, whether it’s security or other employees to help people at self-checkout.

“So, you know you’re not accomplishing anything. You’re not reducing labour, you’re not getting a better shopping experience.”

I also use self-checkout at Costco if I don’t have too much stuff. However, there are always two or three employees at work, checking membership cards and helping shoppers.

They get better through-put with self-check, but at what cost? Those employees could be running regular checkout, and save the cost of purchase and maintenance of the extra hardware.

I have mixed feelings.

I imagine, like everything else at Costco, there was significant “bean counting” done before they rolled them out across the enterprise.

I have always been impressed with Costco’s line management in their front end.

Walmart has rows and rows of reserved parking for customers who want their order brought to the car and loaded in their vehicle.

I don’t understand you. If you don’t like self checkout, don’t use them. I like them. Why would you want to ban something that others like?

I don’t want to ban the cashier’s lines. Can’t we have both?

Our target store has supervised self checkout and the line is usually very long. The Target staff at the self checkout area are both helping customers with check out issues and trying to watch that customers are scanning all they brought to check out. I don’t think it is working, as now also some store items (quality men’s underwear for instance) are now locked behind glass panels over the shelves and require store assistance to unlock a panel (there is a nearby button that can be pressed).

Self checkout is fine... I use my charge card for the purchases. No problems for me.

“In New York, I had to buy the bags, too.”

Here, it’s even worse at Walmart where no disposable bags of any kind are available, paid or not.

They can spin this all they like, the reality is its being scapped due to theft, period.

6-8 checkouts with 1-2 people working them does not equate it doesn’t save labor.. it does.. but theft is far higher with self checkout so those losses equate to several more employees worth of salaries.

So they can spin it all they like, but the real reason isn’t they want to provide better service, its that they are having too much theft at the self checkout lines.

A lot of theft. Besides, I like some of the cashiers at the grocery store I go to.

I just talked to a gal who is low income, she scans all her produce as a banana. Pomegranates at 4.99 per pound, scanned as a banana at 39 cents per pound, etc...

So some people like them for nefarious reasons. This is why self checkouts will soon be gone.

Lock down self check out, but shop lifting is in a Full On Green Lignt for a Go.

Heard someting interesting. I was informed that items on the shelf at a Walmart, are actually still property of the vendor.
It is not until you actually Scan & “buy” thje item, is whem it then becomes property of Walmart.
Local cops are not responding to Walmart shoplifting complaints dince if an item is shoplifted, its not actualy property of Walmart, so Walmart cant actually charge anyone with shoplifting/

Is this correct???

I noticed our local Walmart, despite the 20 or so self check-outs, is staffing more checkers. Lowes on the other hand rarely staffs any checkers except at the contractor door. Unless you want to stand behind a contractor with a giant order, you have to do self check.

Duh. The self-checkout terminals don't work. Of course you need people to help.

By "help" I mean "act like it is the customer's fault that the terminal doesn't work" or "act like the customer is trying to steal."

I got majorly burned at a COSTCO. I self checked out. Some confusion in scanning, so 1 items was scanned twice and another item was not scanned.
Yes, I bought the more expensive item twice.

I h ad a lot of items, and the door guard mis counted my shopping cart count.

Then after going through each item and comparing to my reciept, I was asked to pay for the item in question.

So now i payed for an item twice, once at a higher price, then once at the regular price.

Solution, I will NEVER use self check out, for when the store clerk rings you out, you will get a different color of receipt.
Then the door guard doesn't “count” items in your cart.
