The study also determined where the big cats live. Their densest populations are in coastal forests in Humboldt and Mendocino counties, while they’re least dense in the high desert east of the Sierra Nevadas in Inyo County.
“The Central Valley and portions of the Mojave Desert have no mountain lions,” Dellinger told the Times.
Mountain lions are under consideration for threatened status. The California Fish and Game Commission is expected to rule on the issue later this year.

Yes, I’ve personally noticed the decline of cougars in the last several decades.
Not related to the cats, but I recall an old story about the declining Sperm Whale population.
Apparently, scientists were saying that there were something like 100,000 sperm whales in the ocean. Which is shocking, because at one point there were as many as 500,000. Humans had taken quite a toll.
Then they did a big study, counting sperm whales.
They realized that there were about 750,000 sperm whales in the ocean. And this was pretty shocking, because at one point there were as many as 4 million. Humans had taken quite a toll.

From my perspective there is no shortage of them. Just go to any suburban bar in any major city and observe.....
