Yes, I’ve personally noticed the decline of cougars in the last several decades.

Not related to the cats, but I recall an old story about the declining Sperm Whale population.

Apparently, scientists were saying that there were something like 100,000 sperm whales in the ocean. Which is shocking, because at one point there were as many as 500,000. Humans had taken quite a toll.

Then they did a big study, counting sperm whales.

They realized that there were about 750,000 sperm whales in the ocean. And this was pretty shocking, because at one point there were as many as 4 million. Humans had taken quite a toll.

From my perspective there is no shortage of them. Just go to any suburban bar in any major city and observe.....

No hunting of mountain lions in California. Since the no hunting referendum has passed, problems with mountain lions have increased substantially.

They are not really desert creatures. They can adapt, but prefer more hospitable habitats.

It’s quality, not quantity. The smart ones are very skilled and size up their partner interests very carefully. Immediate needs are second only to living solitary lives at the same time. Old cougars need lots of space to venture about and be left alone. Once they start attacking, its a a long and intense journey that could last for days. But when it’s over, run away quickly. It may be months until she attacks again.

about 5 years ago kid wrecked his car (rolled it off a cliff) and had to walk home 5 miles up the mountain road to get home.

There was a cougar that would stalk him almost every night.

he bought a green laser pointer pen and made the cougar chase the dot away from him every night.

Please, folks. Let’s stay on topic! This post is supposed to be about big cats only.
I’d like to say more, but I’m off to meet some, uh, cougars.

The Central Valley and portions of the Mojave Desert have no mountain lions

Hmm, the central valley is generally heavily populated by people, yes? And isn't there a shortfall of life in general, in the desert?

I'm surprised they didn't include the phrase "and there is a total absence in the Pacific".
