Dame Esther Rantzen has revealed she has joined Dignitas as she battles stage 4 lung cancer and may go there to die, following around 650 Britons who have flown to Switzerland to end their lives at the secretive assisted suicide clinic.
A BBC documentary sparked complaints from Samaritans because it showed the moment Simon Binner smiled as he administered the barbiturate that induced his coma and death.
Viewers were moved to tears as he played a final message for his wife before he took his life, saying: 'Time and tide wait for no man, I love you very much Debbie. Goodbye.' Mr Binner, who was terminally ill with aggressive motor neurone disease, had already used his LinkedIn profile to announce the dates of his death and funeral in November 2015.
Janet Appleyard used her $25,000 life savings to go to Zurich by private jet in February 2021 after a debilitating stroke, needing oxygen on her final journey by plane and then taxi to Dignitas.
She passed away peacefully after taking life-ending drugs following a tearful FaceTime video conversation with members of her family back home in Britain, in a case that has shed new light on the process.
Janet's daughter Mandy revealed her mother had a final meal of breakfast cereal - eating it with 'relish' - on the morning before drinking the drug that sent her to sleep and caused her heart to stop.
Her euthanasia came only after two interviews with a doctor who needed to be satisfied that her decision to die was final, asking her: 'Why did she want to die? Did she understand that the end of the Dignitas process was death? Did she want to go home and reflect?'.

Just wondering.
The Powers That Be see this as the best possible solution — get all the old people to rush out and choose suicide. The ledger-books balance nicely after that.
Ah! I am Jewish, and religious. I went to Catholic schools.
Your question has many facets, including the personal, which I address, with respect to you.
I have been told over and over again that suicide is evil.
Abortion, I believe, is wrong, because it takes the life of the helpless, the innocent.
Socialist / Communist governments make a business from killing off the no-longer-useful.
That is wrong. The trend is wrong. The culture is wrong.
But I am not helpless, or innocent. My life is mine. My LORD is mine.
My pain, my decisions, my judgement before the LORD is mine.
I cannot bring myself to judge another man on suicide,
I am not sure whether I could bring myself to judge myself.
If they want to pay to be murdered under their own free will have at it.
If the government or anyone wants you dead pushes to do so against your will, then those doing the pushing should be exterminated.
Romans 10:13
$30 in fenanyl and some foil to smoke it from and you’re stone cold blue-dead.
There is a song by AC/DC which you are probably familiar with
Highway to Hell.
As traditional Catholic this song describes road those who take the easy way out of life’s trials and tribulations have taken.
Those who commit suicide have committed murder and having murdered themselves have no chance of redemption and forgiveness of this mortal sin.
Highway To Hell is about a bar in Perth where Bon Scott used to go to.
Just what I was thinking
Cheap and effective for the purpose.
Readily available.
No travel and you can die in your own bed.
But of course the aftermath is eternal damnation and eternal suffering in a lake of fire.
But at least its cheap
There has been several times in my 90 years that I wanted to die. I even cried and begged to dye, When I was birthing my first born, I wanted to die because the pain was unbearable. I wanted to die when that same child died from Cancer at age22. I wanted to die when my husband of 52 yrs passed away. I am still here and still wishing that the Lord would take me, but I still know also that God is in control. There is something yet for me to learn. I will live until God says, “It’s time now my child”.
Thanks
I did not know that.
Right to Die = Duty to Die
Less money spent on public welfare the dark side of Libertarianism IMHO.
To specify what I mean consider the Libertarian David Seymour in New Zealand (ACT Party) now a cabinet minister there.
Mr. Seymour wants to expand the categories of people in his country allowed to get MAD (Medically Assisted Death).
A 25 cent razor blade will do the job if you really want to do it.
Even a used one
“How would such a thing like this be judged?” Simple. Active ending of death is guilty of murder, such as taking poison. Passive ending of death is innocent and ethical, such as allowing natural death and removing artificial iv’s.
I liked your comments.
I am a Christian. I was raised in the church (mainstream protestant). I am in my late 70s.
I have seen death up close and personal with my own life and in those very close to me. Losing a close family member whom you love very much is absolutely devestating. Most terrible experience in my life. I have personally faced death with two medical condtions -- cancer and loss of kidney function.
Death is normal. All of us will face death -- and death will win. That is, the death of our body on this earth.
I believe strongly in a Creator and a God who will welcome us into eternity when our temporal life ends here. Very strongly!
I can see a situation where I might choose this life ending option.
Quality of life is important to me. Having gone through a very difficult sickness and excruciating sorrow and beliveing the Word of God as found in the Holy Bible, makes the transition easy in my mind. That is a new life (or a return) in eternity.
I work hard to stay healthy and mentally fit and happy. But if that changed dramaticlly I can see a situation where I would make that trip.
I have never understood the attention getting of involving others in one’s suicide.
One except in very limited circumstances can easily manage ones own painless death
So you have never hunted or fished?
Basic/lizard brain is to fight for your life.
I wounded a doe once, she hauld a$$ to the nearest creek. I found her and did the deed.
The basic instinct of every human, mammal, fish, insect is to live.
I’ve had a few people in my life just give up. Never understood it.
Life is precious.
To give up is to go against GOD.
A final exit is a matter best left to those who face down a horrible death. My mom died from ALS. She refused a ventilator or oxygen. She wanted to die at home, on her terms.
A bottle of nitrogen welding gas (99% pure) is a whole lot cheaper. Just saying.
