What was done to Joseph McCarthy is a stain on our country.
He should have been celebrated. Instead, people allowed the Left (who were and are in collusion with people who want to see America crippled and gone) to paint McCarthy so effectively that "McCarthyism" is taught in schools at all levels to tar him and salt the earth so that his legacy can never be resurrected.
When I see what has happened to Donald Trump, I believe that is what the Left would have done to Joseph McCathy had they the means to do so at that time because people, including many (but not all) in the government still believed in the Constitution and the legal guidelines of our Republic. They weren't able to, because they would never have gotten away with it, but today, the Constitution is now a paper tiger.
The Left and their allies feel completely confident that the Constitution may be ignored, it won't be brought up in the Press, the government will not pursue violations, and they will continue to ignore the Constitution until someone goes to war with them over compliance with it.
Sadly, I don't see that kind of leadership from any political party in anything other than small dribs and drabs, and mostly only when it suits their agenda.

It seems obvious that the current plan is to treat Trump the same way. They want to send him into the history books as a corrupt racist who tried to overthrow the government. I don’t think the effort will succeed with Trump, but McCarthy has been successfully vilified for 70 years, so maybe the Left will triumph all over again.

I witnessed a round table of this era and Joseph McCarthy in particular about 20 years ago at a forensic seminar put on by several conservative groups which came to the conclusion that Joe McCarthy had the right message, unfortunately Joe McCarthy was the wrong messenger. Not to detract from Joseph McCarthy but the press absolutely went on a dicrediting campaign because of his alcoholism. It was the chink in the armor and the Press exploited it to the utmost.

There are several problems with Joseph’s investigation.
First of all, his investigation was different than the highly successful HUAC investigations going on in the House, which identified and removed hundreds of communists.
Second, he was intending to run for president, *against* President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a master of political infighting. DDE did much to neutralize his campaign and undermine his program, busting up his campaign timetable.
And third was his profound alcoholism. Alcoholics ruin the judgment center of their brain, damage that can last for six months after they go dry.
His heart was in the right place, but his execution was awful. And ever since then, the left has tried very hard to negate the HUAC investigations by rolling them into his.
If McCarthy were alive today he’d he would have been at the forefront to help Trump rid us of the deep state.

I have read M. Stanton Evans' Blacklisted by History and it is infuriating how so much evidence in the archives about McCarthy and his era is mysteriously missing. The whole thing is a textbook study in the connection between the "revolutionary" Left and the ruling class. Eventually one must ask: is the Left merely a front for the ruling class to obtain more power for itself? Was it always this way? Was Marx secretly working for Metternich? (You must forgive me for being so influenced by the J-- Witnesses as a youth. Their Theocratic anarchism, the idea that the governments of the world are inherently Satanic and incapable of conversion, was one of the factors that led to my short and sad career in the John Birch Society.)
Considering how socially conservative Stalinism was, it's hard to understand why today's lunatic Left even defends it. Shouldn't they be denouncing it for its "homophobia?"
Unfortunately the Senator will in all probability never be rehabilitated (as if he needed it!). Anti-Communism--even the legitimate non-racist variety--is still the ultimate crime to an Establishment that makes classical Communism look like repressive Calvinism.
