The failure and disintegration of the Soviet Union opened KGB files to inspection, notably by M. Stanton Evans and Herbert Romerstein. The key book that came from this is Stalin's Secret Agents, which even more than The Venona Secrets should be on everyone's required reading lists. The KGB files unquestionably proved that McCarthy had the goods. And that "historians" that I was force-fed in school, like Arthur Schlesinger Jr., were at least misguided, if not outright liars.
