Joseph McCarthy is the most unjustly demonized individual in American history.
In February 1950, McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin, launched a massive campaign against alleged Communists and Soviet agents working for, and perhaps spying on, the U.S. government. In Senate hearings stretching across much of the first half of the 1950s, he accused numerous U.S. government employees, including many in the State Department, of being Communists or even agents of Soviet Intelligence. He was bitterly opposed by powerful members of the Senate, by numerous high-ranking officials within both the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, and by the overwhelming preponderance of the press corps. He was finally censured by the U.S. Senate in December 1954 and died, possibly of effects of alcoholism, several years later. He was forty-eight.
The demonizations, then and now, involve charges that McCarthy lied, badgered, intimidated, victimized innocents, and fanned the flames of a massive anti-Communist hysteria. A typical account of his methods is provided by History.com’s “This Day in History,” which claims, “In widely publicized hearings, McCarthy bullied defendants under cross-examination with unlawful and damaging accusations, destroying the reputations of hundreds of innocent officials and citizens.”1

I have read M. Stanton Evans' Blacklisted by History and it is infuriating how so much evidence in the archives about McCarthy and his era is mysteriously missing. The whole thing is a textbook study in the connection between the "revolutionary" Left and the ruling class. Eventually one must ask: is the Left merely a front for the ruling class to obtain more power for itself? Was it always this way? Was Marx secretly working for Metternich? (You must forgive me for being so influenced by the J-- Witnesses as a youth. Their Theocratic anarchism, the idea that the governments of the world are inherently Satanic and incapable of conversion, was one of the factors that led to my short and sad career in the John Birch Society.)
Considering how socially conservative Stalinism was, it's hard to understand why today's lunatic Left even defends it. Shouldn't they be denouncing it for its "homophobia?"
Unfortunately the Senator will in all probability never be rehabilitated (as if he needed it!). Anti-Communism--even the legitimate non-racist variety--is still the ultimate crime to an Establishment that makes classical Communism look like repressive Calvinism.

Every single Democrat (including those from the South) voted to condemn him, and were praised by liberals at the time for doing so. Besides, to the Left, to be an anti-Communist is to be a racist!

Exactly the same as my experience. I'm old enough to have seen snatches of the hearings on my neighbor's (we didn't have on yet) TV. Got the full brunt of the leftist-inspired vilification in school and college. And naively believed it as if it were fact until I read Evans & Romerstein, and another one called "Dupes" by Paul Kengor.
Moscow can't produce a decent automobile, but they sure knew how to manipulate American public opinion. And they're still doing it today, if you follow any of the "news" about Ukraine on FR.

To prove what you say is true do you know what famous family he was close with? The Kennedys!
He was good friends with John Kennedy and he was trusted by the family so much he actually dated one of the daughters.
He was a Republican yet his real core was Patriotic American.
Another tidbit is his outstanding war service. He still (I guess) has records for most MG rounds expended on a mission. His actual number of combat flights is much higher than listed as he was such a great guy he would go for friends when they were sick, or even afraid and stressed out etc. As a politician / attorney of some importance he was offered a cushy desk job but refused it so he could share the actual fighting.

You wouldn’t believe how many arguments I’ve had with leftists on Quora (in case you didn’t know the unofficial home of radical leftists) on Nazism being left.
I usually have to bring out the “big guns” as they will argue incessantly Nazism is far right and very similar to MAGA. Big guns being the fact Joesph Goebbels (German minister of propaganda and IMO the most intelligent of them) wrote several pieces explaining how Nazism was a new form of Socialism.
And yes I think the Frankfurt school theory has much merit. More than likely the NYT did (and does) have more than a few commies working inside.
On Harvard have you seen / read of their current President? She seems to be critical theory personified.
