I have read M. Stanton Evans' Blacklisted by History and it is infuriating how so much evidence in the archives about McCarthy and his era is mysteriously missing. The whole thing is a textbook study in the connection between the "revolutionary" Left and the ruling class. Eventually one must ask: is the Left merely a front for the ruling class to obtain more power for itself? Was it always this way? Was Marx secretly working for Metternich? (You must forgive me for being so influenced by the J-- Witnesses as a youth. Their Theocratic anarchism, the idea that the governments of the world are inherently Satanic and incapable of conversion, was one of the factors that led to my short and sad career in the John Birch Society.)
Considering how socially conservative Stalinism was, it's hard to understand why today's lunatic Left even defends it. Shouldn't they be denouncing it for its "homophobia?"
Unfortunately the Senator will in all probability never be rehabilitated (as if he needed it!). Anti-Communism--even the legitimate non-racist variety--is still the ultimate crime to an Establishment that makes classical Communism look like repressive Calvinism.

He was good friends with John Kennedy and he was trusted by the family so much he actually dated one of the daughters.
He was a Republican yet his real core was Patriotic American.
Another tidbit is his outstanding war service. He still (I guess) has records for most MG rounds expended on a mission. His actual number of combat flights is much higher than listed as he was such a great guy he would go for friends when they were sick, or even afraid and stressed out etc. As a politician / attorney of some importance he was offered a cushy desk job but refused it so he could share the actual fighting.
