Joseph McCarthy is the most unjustly demonized individual in American history.
In February 1950, McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin, launched a massive campaign against alleged Communists and Soviet agents working for, and perhaps spying on, the U.S. government. In Senate hearings stretching across much of the first half of the 1950s, he accused numerous U.S. government employees, including many in the State Department, of being Communists or even agents of Soviet Intelligence. He was bitterly opposed by powerful members of the Senate, by numerous high-ranking officials within both the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, and by the overwhelming preponderance of the press corps. He was finally censured by the U.S. Senate in December 1954 and died, possibly of effects of alcoholism, several years later. He was forty-eight.
The demonizations, then and now, involve charges that McCarthy lied, badgered, intimidated, victimized innocents, and fanned the flames of a massive anti-Communist hysteria. A typical account of his methods is provided by History.com’s “This Day in History,” which claims, “In widely publicized hearings, McCarthy bullied defendants under cross-examination with unlawful and damaging accusations, destroying the reputations of hundreds of innocent officials and citizens.”1

While 7 years old this article shows conclusively that communist agents had and were still actively infiltrating and working to destroy the USA from within. It names them and offers proof of his accusations mostly being accurate by documents that later surfaced such as the Venona Files.
Today, he might not drink himself to death over it.
Some whisper he didn’t.
“Through harrowing months of trial and error, the analysts were able to crack the Soviet code. What they found was not information leading to a separate peace treaty, but a large-scale, well-organized Soviet espionage penetration of the highest levels of the U.S. government.”

He never needed vindication in my book.
Me neither.
.
Seems you have to be a socialist to work for the U.S.Dept. Of State.
I agree completely.
What was done to Joseph McCarthy is a stain on our country.
He should have been celebrated. Instead, people allowed the Left (who were and are in collusion with people who want to see America crippled and gone) to paint McCarthy so effectively that "McCarthyism" is taught in schools at all levels to tar him and salt the earth so that his legacy can never be resurrected.
When I see what has happened to Donald Trump, I believe that is what the Left would have done to Joseph McCathy had they the means to do so at that time because people, including many (but not all) in the government still believed in the Constitution and the legal guidelines of our Republic. They weren't able to, because they would never have gotten away with it, but today, the Constitution is now a paper tiger.
The Left and their allies feel completely confident that the Constitution may be ignored, it won't be brought up in the Press, the government will not pursue violations, and they will continue to ignore the Constitution until someone goes to war with them over compliance with it.
Sadly, I don't see that kind of leadership from any political party in anything other than small dribs and drabs, and mostly only when it suits their agenda.
If you go to wiki they have 12 screen sized sections of writing mostly smearing him.
At the end of the piece they have 2 paragraphs devoted to recently discovered documents that proved he was correct. Like Venona.

I am surprised that even today, many conservative writers do not understand that McCarthy was mostly correct. Victor Davis Hanson is one notable example.
Me either!
God bless my mother. She always said “McCarthy was right.”
Mine either. I’ve admired his work for years.
He was right but his methods were wrong. The matter should have been handled privately. Very privately. If you take my meaning.
The courage of McCarthy v. the cowardice of current Republican politicians.
It seems obvious that the current plan is to treat Trump the same way. They want to send him into the history books as a corrupt racist who tried to overthrow the government. I don’t think the effort will succeed with Trump, but McCarthy has been successfully vilified for 70 years, so maybe the Left will triumph all over again.
