Further, 17% of all owned homes are occupied by single or married seniors with two or more spare bedrooms.
“The surge of spare bedrooms speaks to a mismatch in the housing market, at a time when so many feel there are too few options available,” Salviati said.
Seniors aging in place are keeping a significant share of single-family homes unavailable to younger generations, according to Salviati. It’s why, in part, it’s hard for millennials to break into homeownership.

My two spare bedrooms are occupied by Mr Smith and Mr Wesson.
My motto is “come and take it”
I also proudly fly the Gadsden Flag.
The Federal Reserve lowered the interest rate—reflected in mortgage rates—to rock bottom for a decade.
Then they started raising those rates—locking homeowners into their homes since it would be super dumb to ditch a low interest rate mortgage for a high interest rate mortgage.
Then they blame homeowners for not moving/downsizing.
Raw evil.
It’s the same with big rented apartments in NYC. People used to rent out rooms after the kids moved out, but now there are regulations against subrenting your own apartment. You must have only one other resident, and the rent paid by the roommate can’t be more than half the total rent.
It’s just as well, since the law later also changed to make anyone who lives in your apartment for more than 30 days into a legal resident who might have to be removed in court. No more automatic eviction allowed, if desired, by the lease holder, if I have all of that correct.
It’s all because of the clownishly absurd population growth. When I was in 7th grade, someone visited our social studies class to warn us that we’d better be more careful, as the population of the earth was now MORE THAN TWO BILLION!!!
I’m aware that overpopulation is not a favorite conservative point of view, but it helps to be aware of the problem, and what “geometric growth” really means. It’s the root of many if not all of our problems.
You and I will get along just fine.
Under socialism three people are overpopulation.
Under capitalism ten billion is not enough population.
IMO, this is the first step by government to quarter illegals in existing senior homes. Either that or they want to pass a law they must sell their homes with extra bedrooms at some set formulaic price.
Remove the closets in two of your bedrooms and you only have a 1 bedroom house.
Yeah, a spare bedroom tax is much easier to do than making us house illegal aliens, but there are plenty of Democrats who would do it if they could.
Who decides how many bedrooms are in a house? I have a bedroom with a refrigerator. I also have a bedroom with a lot of people sitting around watching TV. I have a bedroom where people use it to get from one end of the house to the other.
Obama & The Gang would love to fill your spare rooms with their illegal invaders.
^^ THAT ^^ is their goal.

We lived in your “retirement home” and we don’t have a “spare bedroom”. 1900 sq ft home with one bedroom and bath that is designated Owners Suite. There is an Office Room, a Meditation Room, Exersize/Storage Room. No Spare Rooms!!
Sounds like you live in a shotgun house, LOL.
Besides being a cause of these economic effects it is also an effect of other economic causes. Back up a few decades and allow today’s seniors to keep more of their earnings and today they would be living in newer country estates with even more unused bedrooms. Newer generations would be occupying the older houses closer to work, earning more money, and saving more of it.
or move illegals in...
In the movie, Dr. Zhivago, the communists took over in Russia and the upper class family who lived in a big house in Moscow were FORCED to allow “comrades” to occupy most of the house. The actual owners were forced to live only in one upstairs room.
Their summer cottage was seized by the Soviet government and became the property of the State which boarded it up and posted a warning sign on it - DO NOT TRESPASS.
You mean our office and our craft rooms? with one bedroom for extra guests who visit 6-10 weeks a year? that also doubles as a “one of us can’t sleep “ room?
They need to mind their own damn business.
I have no sympathy for millenials who think they are owed something.
My father grew up during the depression. His family sometimes did not have enough to eat.
Nobody promised any of us an easy life.
Life has ALWAYS been a struggle for most in the world.
