Weekly Garden Thread - November 11-17, 2023 [Roasted Vegetable Recipes Edition]
November 11, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 11/11/2023 5:55:25 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Aw shucks Diana....3 years shy of retirement!

(Uncle was a Gunnery Sgt in the Marine Corp. At 17 years his wife...a very beautiful woman...told him that if he he re-upped she would divorce him so he left with 17 years. After 4 or 5 years later she ended up divorcing him any way.)

Frames are all welded up. Just need to prop the peak of them up and spray them down with Ospho. I bought a $11 - 1 gal pump sprayer months ago just for this.

64 and sunny tomorrow so I’ll start painting as soon as it gets a little over 50 degrees. Will only take an hour or so. Paint dries to touch in 2-4 hours and is dry to handle in 5-9 hours so I may or may not get one in the ground.

Maybe I’ll leave certain spots unpainted on one so we can handle it sooner. If I can get one in tomorrow, I can get the rest in Monday easily.

Frames galore, treated with Ospho and a brown goat doe munching in the background(and above her, a ridge I'll someday have a good view of)

Wow—never thought of adding them to a sandwich.

Open the italian bread, lay on the roasted peppers, onions, squash or whatever else is soft enough, letting the juices soak the bread; top with mozzarella or provolone, and put under the broiler or the air fryer for a few minutes. To die from!

“And then you managed a garden center.”

I am still good friends with my Manager from those days. And you know what? She DID NOT HIRE ME the first time around! I had applied for seasonal work that Spring and I never heard back from her!

Then, come February, she called me in for an interview. (I was still working for Seed Savers at the time.) “I wanted to hire you back then, but I knew you were too good for the job I was going to give you. I was able to finally fire the loser that had the job I wanted for you, so here we are, today. What do you say?” I should have run, but I usually don’t run from a challenge. ;)

She made me ‘Perennial Manager’ at first - then next season she said, “I’m pretty sure you can also handle managing the Nursery Yard.’ So then I had BOTH jobs. (With a substantial raise.) The next season she ‘promoted me’ to ‘Yard Manager’ so I was in charge of the first Spring Pansy to the last colorful Maple Trees sold that season. AND all of the Spring bulbs you plant in the Fall!

Oh, and year-round on top of all that other stuff? I managed ‘The Atrium’ where we sold thousands of House Plants year-round! (I made some good friends in the, ‘Florida Plant Biz’ those years.)

And then ALL of the Fall stuff (Mums, Pumpkins, etc) and then before I knew it I was in charge of CHRISTMAS! Fresh cut trees, roping, boughs, Christmas decor inside the store, blah-blah-blah! (I was just glad that I got to come INSIDE some of the time when it was snowing or sleeting or only 20 degrees out there!)

Then she started grooming me for HER job (which was mostly financial and paperwork and ENDLESS Corporate meetings) because she was SO ready to Retire...and then I was hired by Corporate for her job.

And then I hired other good people and I DELEGATED - a LOT! :)

“Life was hard, but we learned from those times, didn’t we?”

The younger generation(s) have NO idea what lies ahead of them. :(

*BUMP* Pine Tree Seeds is amazing on their prices - granted they send you smaller packets, but seriously, who needs 40 tomato seeds when you just want to start one or two plants of various varieties for the home garden?

I think they’ve really hit on something good here. Not ALL of us are saving seed in bulk - and I’d rather THEY have it on hand in a controlled environment than the seeds wasting away in someones shoe box in the pantry.

I saw on their website that they will be mailing out 2024 catalogs sooner than soon! They are usually one of the first catalogs I receive.

Yeah, I know! I have full medical benefits and some educational benefits if I still want to use them. (My local Women’s Clinic at the VA ROCKS!)

I researched it all before I left and the ‘then-huz’ and I weighed all the pros and cons. Mainly HE didn’t want to step up and carry his weight in the situation so that was that. *SHRUG*

Yeah - it hurt to have to leave but (AS YOU KNOW) you’ve got to take care of your kids first. ;)

We canned 38 quarts of butternut cubes. I plan on roasting them in the oven, dumping them in soup, making soup and so on. We shall see how they turn out.

Thank you for your service!

This year my husband had so much okra I tired of it. At his aunt’s funeral family gathering I remarked how tired I was of okra. One of his cousins suggested roasted okra which didn’t sound great. Did it and we have LOVED it!

Found under "New for 2024"

Doubt I'd get this book but I did find a couple in their Clearance section that I'll probably grab.

Can you even imagine how many cherry-tomatoes that would produce? Yikes!

I only plant winter squashes every few years but this season I got five nice Butternuts out of the compost pile for free. It’s magic! :)
