Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia of Will Geer's (grandpa Walton) long-time boyfriend, Harry Hay. Also, Greer and Hay were both communists. I have not been able to watch The Waltons since I first read about this 10 years ago. There is lots more at the site.

I agree. What helps me to forgive when great harm has been done is knowing that the person who caused harm doesn’t realize that they will be punished for their wrongdoing, if not in this life, then in the next. The harm they caused, will be experienced by them, and maybe even more so.

Plus, understanding that I cannot forgive someone who harmed others, nor does forgiveness in any way condone what was done, nor that I have to have anything to do with the person.
