You have a understandable and justified interest from Israel to Destroy Hamas.
However, I think the current plan will provoke an enormous reaction from the Muslim world.
Pretty much everyone from Indonesia to Morocco is going to be extremely upset and I think we will see the front against Israel in the region coalesce into a real Military alliance against Israel.
We need to protect Israel from itself.
The problem is, it takes a President who has the authority and strength to tell the Israeli Government no, you can not go into Gaza and execute the plans you have.

Israel simply cannot live with Hamas remaining in control of Gaza after the scale of the attacks and atrocities it committed.
As far as any military alliance against Israel, this is very unlikely. The Muslim states nearest to Israel are severely divided: neither Iran nor the Saudis nor Egypt, etc., want Erdogan reestablishing a new Ottoman sultanate.
Neither Turkey, nor KSA nor Jordan, etc., want greater Iranian influence (and Iran has to be concerned it will be nuked by Israel).
There's a lot of grousing, but I suspect nothing will happen.
If Obama had succeeded in placing the Muslim Brotherhood in charge of Egypt, then there probably would have been a much larger war.

By size, Gaza is 141 square miles. Vietnam is 127,881 square miles. Afghanistan is 252,072 square miles.
Respecting the size of the countries, your analogy is almost 1000 times off base (ergo misleading) with respect to Vietnam and roughly/nearly 2000 times off base regarding Afghanistan.
After the USS Liberty incident, I’m not a HUGE fan of Israel (maybe 51%). But, I am 1000% with them on eradicating the Hamas vermin baby killers and mass rapists (as a military/terrorist tactic) by whatever means necessary despite what Putin’s lap boy propagandist MacGregor blabbers almost daily.

Similarly, a country that goes to the expense and trouble of building nuclear weapons and the systems to deliver them should be assumed to be willing to use them when national survival is at stake.
Offhand, I can think of four cases after WW II in which the use of nuclear weapons was credibly threatened: the Korean War (by the US against China); the Cuban missile crisis; by Russia against China after their falling out; and by Russia on Egypt's behalf in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

One thing I don’t understand -— historically, Israel responds to attacks immediately, hostages or not. This sitting on the fence, waiting for approval from other nations, is very troublesome to me.

I see Yemen has declared war against Israel today; they have already been firing missiles from there anyway. This is a ploy to threaten a wider conflict to force a cease fire - which I believe the US will eventually support by forcing Israel to stand down. I don’t see how (right now) an Israeli leader can stand down from putting this criminal terrorist element out of reach of their people once and for all - they are truly capable. The trick will be to ‘hide’ their effectiveness against these enemies to accomplish all this - I really don’t see how Israel can consider anything else a success; I believe the people are there now if the government wasn’t.
