Anyone else find it a coincidence they nominated someone for Speaker with a 75% Liberty score (not bad) after jettisoning Jordan (90%+), Emmer (50%) and Scalise (50%).
It looks like they picked someone as a compromise right within the average (or middle) score.
If anyone follows the Liberty score (I know many do here) please let me know your thoughts because I find it remarkable.
Also, how does Mike Johnson compare to the others? What were his good and bad votes in your opinion?
Many thanks...
The unanimous vote scares me a little
đ
Yes. What did he trade away...
Whoever the nominee was for speaker could only lose 5 Republican votes among the entire GOP conference. Honestly, Johnson was the best candidate you were going to get that EVERYBODY could agree to at this point.
CORRECTION: they could only lose 4 votes.
I was somewhat confused about how he made it. I also wondered why his Liberty Score was 75% only if he’s the great conservative everyone is saying he is. Jordan, Donalds, Gaetz would all be rejected, then suddenly this uber conservative gets a unanimous vote. Odd.
Sooner or later the dems/GOPe/uniparty want their kickbacks, campaign donations for favors from lobbyists and everything else the Founding Fathers abhorred. They can’t get that until those thieves spend our stolen tax money and pile the rest on the national debt bringing us closer to collapse. Look for a massive CR in about 10 days.
You are correct.
They were desperate to keep the Speakership (and thus, power) in the 50th conservative percentile (McCarthy, McHenry, Scalise) and moving to the 90th percentile with Jordan was a bridge too far.
They tried moving into the 60th percentile with Emmer, but that was a no-go.
So we got a Speaker in the 70th percentile. The House electorate just HAD to move in a more conservative direction because the general electorate had moved in that direction.
Most of the old moderate-liberal Boehner boys had retired in 2018 to help the Democrats. And when the House became Republican again, it was a far more conservative body. The old guard were able to retain power but for only nine months. Now we’re in a new era with a far more conservative speaker.
Great analysis it was no coincidence then.
Also, if you go through the representatives collective Liberty scores, there are A LOT within the 70th percentile. So a Speaker in the 70th percentile is pretty representative of the general body.
Certainly not as conservative as some of us would like but certainly not as liberal as before.
And furthermore, a lot of the Liberty Score “liberal” votes are for spending bills, voting for omnibuses, etc. We get that under control with Speaker Johnson, a number of representatives will move into the 80’s since they’re generally conservative otherwise.
A lot of comments on this thread remind me of the two geezers in the balcony on the Muppet Show; they heckled every damn thing that happened on stage.
I read this quote yesterday from the horrible Jamie Raskin, and if he is saying Johnson has "good manners," that makes me think Johnson is probably very charismatic.
"Democrat Jamie Raskin, who serves on the Judiciary Committee alongside Speaker Johnson, is brutal in his evaluation of Johnson and Republicans more broadly, saying the new speaker has âmuch better mannersâ than G.O.P. firebrands but âis a MAGA extremist in substance.â
From Bing CHAT AI:
According to the Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC), Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana has a lifetime score of 90% for his conservative voting recordš. This means he is one of the most conservative members of the House Republican Conference, along with other Trump allies such as Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio². Johnson is also the vice chair of the House Republican Conference and a former chairman of the Republican Study Committee². He is known for his fiery exchanges on the House Judiciary Committee and his support for former President Trumpâs efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election²³.
Johnson was nominated by his GOP peers as their fourth choice for speaker, after three previous candidates failed to get enough votes. He faces a tough challenge to win the gavel, as he needs 217 votes from the GOP conference and he already has more than 40 votes against him². Johnson said he has a clear vision and plan for how to lead the GOP through the unprecedented challenges facing the country, such as foreign threats, national debt, border security, and more². He also said he would restore trust, advance a comprehensive policy agenda, promote individual members, engage members, effectively message, build and utilize external coalitions, and develop and grow the GOP majority².

What was McCarthy’s?
Establishment has shown it is willing to destroy any conservative, i.e.: Jordan.
Iâve read that Mike Johnson had agreed at times to vote with McCarthyâs agenda in order to make some progress- to be a team player.
He may have been the best they diverse group would agree upon- at least it was accomplished before McCarthy could sabotage it.
Not good he talked about Israel before the Border!
We have a responsibility to keep it that way. It will only be continued pressure on all House Republicans that can do it. Any sniff of bad legislation we need to lock down the votes that goes against the RINO majority.
Iâm trying to be positive and the best I can come up with is Johnson could go in one of two directions and we need to make it the more conservative direction. The entire reason Johnson is Speaker is there was a massive revolt by the MAGA electorate. The swamp lost this time. Now we need to hammer it into Johnsonâs head what happened to Cantor, Boehner, Ryan, McCarthy and other RINO scum.
Now is not the time to let up.
