Having an argument with the wife, she doesn't want to spend the extra money. Anywhere from $1,000 on up.
I have had a number of semi-auto shotguns jam with various loads. I tend to prefer the pump action ones, rarely an issue.
An M14 isn’t bad either. Always liked the accuracy, reliability and knock down power of the 7.62mm NATO round out of an M14.
Do tell.
Now THAT looks interesting. 🤔
Imagine this: a bad guy is behind your wife with a knife to her throat but you can see his head.
This is an interesting dilemma. We talk about these scenarios at my gun club all the time. I would wait for an open shot. The bad guy is dead if he kills his human shield. If he dragged her while retreating I’d follow. Sooner or later the situation would be resolved. Not to mention even at 20 feet with an AR, you have to take into account the adrenalin and emotion that would interfere with a precise shot.
Specific to the question: 556 hands down. Target rich environment, longer ranges, and the need to penetrate potentially (door, window, car window...).
You might not have the option of staying in place.
Today even many of the bad guys have body armor.
In normal home defense over penetration is a concern, but in a war zone you want that! I want to be able to shoot someone standing behind a door, I want to have the ability to penetrate some body armor, I want to be able to shoot someone in a car (effectively)...
WRT noise, I consider noise when practicing. One cant be concerned with noise if your life is at risk.
😂
The question is compound defence, a neighborhood unit, the portable carbine is definitive show of force that moves insane squads to greener pastures.
The shotgun with sporting clays trains the reflex of target acquisition and commitment. It is useful up close, it zaps the moral of next person in the doorway, but at the doorway things get bad quick.
The AR with steel plate trains killing the hoard moving to/away. With a sqad of AR shooters nothing less than a dozen can close the gap around a farm compound.
The 308, 300 and othe longer systems are to maintain the space between opfor and your lines. We heard of no successful in the long term from Hamas at holding anything. They were squads of children with carbines and a few RPGs.
The hand gun trains the last 5 seconds for the defender. If it gets to hand gun in the situation we saw, already lost as a defender vs a squad of children warriors. The shotgun extends that out by another 30 seconds.
Anyone with cover of their own house, an pattern rifle and 5 Mags in a pouch is an hour long problem at 5 bad guy to 1 good guy ratios.
The whole point is to make anyplace an easier place to be than your home while a war is breaking out. Drop someones battle buddy at the end of your driveway and it takes 35 minutes before they become effective again.
So kill at 400 yards or 100 yards and deal with PTSD for a lifetime... and commit to taking them out as they kill you at 20 yards and 10 yards. You might get very lucky up close, but unless you are just off of IDF specials missions you will not beat wacked out child army.
Where is Hamas footsoilders Mamma and Daddy? they raised some vile SOBs.
Not me. Gonna sell tickets and provide popcorn for my neighbors... :-)
Bookmark for when I get back home.
Beautiful rifle but very hard to get one and they are VERY expensive.
I would think that a 410/.45 Colt would be pretty close to ideal if you could get decent sized magazines for the shotgun, and speed loaders for the wheelgun.
Tell the gunman go ahead you’re next
Argument with the wife? She should be telling you to get them all and stock up on ammo, too (that’s what I do)!
Get your wife one of these.
WHAT !!!!
Shotgun gets the vote if fewer than 6 intruders. More than that and the AR gets the nod, with Mama on backup with the scattergun.
“Imagine this: a bad guy is behind your wife with a knife to her throat but you can see his head. You are 20 feet away in good cover.
Will you take that shot with a shotgun?”
This question requires actual facts for a good answer. If you have worked with your shotgun and load on a pattern board, you know the right answer. I have and in my case I will take the shot at 20 feet. Terrorist dead, wife untouched.
A person who has not done the work and is unfamiliar with his weapon should not take the shot.
If you are going to use an AR-15 in 556 for home defense you might just as well use an RPG,
