TOKYO — After a devastating and tragic surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Emperor Hirohito has called for a ceasefire.
"The loss of life on both sides is a tragedy," Hirohito said in a speech requesting an end to hostilities. "Now that we have pulverized the American naval fleet, we respectfully request that the United States look for ways to promote peace and not take any steps to retaliate until we attack you again. Thank you."
American leaders had already begun talks to enter the war against the Axis Powers but were now bombarded with calls to engage in peace talks instead. "The timing of Japan's request does seem a little suspicious," said Captain Mike Rotunda, a United States Navy spokesman. "I mean, they literally asked for a ceasefire immediately after attacking us. It puts us in a weird position because that's not really how ceasefires work."
Segments of the American public pleaded with leaders to hold back on planning a counterattack and instead listen to Japanese calls for peace. "It would be immoral to strike back at Japan," said one Congressman. "Yes, they just bombed America's naval base. Yes, they seriously crippled our fleet. Yes, they killed over 2,000 Americans. But now they want peace, so we should totally believe them. It's not like they would do anything sneaky."
At publishing time, U.S. officials had tentatively agreed to a ceasefire in good faith despite new reports that more Japanese planes laden with bombs were on their way to Hawaii.

This level of humor escapes me today. Sorry, not sorry.
The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor so, it is an odd request...
How can i coexist when someone wants to behead me for my faith In Christ?
He ended up with a couple of nukes up his butt
It would probably work again

Sometimes the Bee goes beyond humor and sarcasm and forces people to actually think.

The reality is that the UN and others will be wailing for a ceasefire very soon. To stop Israel, before the IDF can terminate Hamas. With extreme prejudice.
If Israel can damage Hamas enough, this will lead to years of peace in that region. And after the 1000 mass murders of Israelis and mass kidnappings, Israel has no choice. Weakness leads to your extinction in the Middle East. In the Arab Muslim world that Israel lives in.
Then one day, must've been around '91 or so, I heard this guy on the radio named Rush Limbaugh pose the question, "How do you negotiate with somebody demanding you drink a glass of poison? Offer to drink half the glass?"
The BB knows how to drive home a valid point by whimsically beating around the bush.
lol. good one.
Only after We dropped Nukes on 2 Japanese Preschools.
At least some in Tokyo thought the US would negotiate a settlement after the Pearl Harbor attack particularly if our entire fleet including our carriers was destroyed or disabled.
I miss Rush, some days more than others, but definitely today.
A Harvard Beets man, don’t cha know.
My step Grandfather (only Grandfather I knew on my Mom’s side as my Mom’s father died before I was born, and my Grandmother remarried) was born in Europe in the 1890’s
A very learnered man, tri lingual. Not sure how, but he wound up in Japan in 1920ish and for a period of time taught Hirohito French. Apparently they formed a bond, as upon both of my Grandparents deaths we found letters of correspondence in their belongings. So the story goes (I have not seen the letters as my Cousins inherited them) Hirohito spoke of his concern of possible war (I believe this was well before Pearl Harbor) and it was concerning China, which war did break out in 1931.
My Mom inherited and has passed on to myself and my Sister a large elaborate multipage engagement / weeding announcement that was sent to my Grandfather from Hirohito. Circa 1923. Wondering where to get that translated / appraised?
