‘It’s horrid’: Man claims two bison shot by refuge workers and left to rot on his property

LAWTON, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma property owner living near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is outraged after he said two bison that wandered onto his property were shot and killed by refuge workers.

“It’s horrid,” said David Folkert.

On Sunday, Folkert’s mother was delighted to spot two bison roaming her property, just behind his land near a dried up creek

“Shortly after that, two Wichita wildlife refuge employees knocked on her front door, inquiring about the two buffalo,” said Folkert.

Then, Folkert said they left

On Monday, Folkert caught the lingering smell of death from his property.

“If I can smell it down here from up there. It’s horrible,” said Folkert.

That’s when Folkert spotted the two bison laying lifeless on the rocks. They’d been shot.

Folkert was livid. He said he drove to the wildlife refuge, a mile from his home, to get answers.

“I visited with an employee out at the refuge, at the visitor center, and he confirmed that two refuge employees did in fact shoot the buffalo on our property,” said Folkert. “For them to come on our property, and not tell us, and to execute two healthy buffalo, that could’ve been saved, herded back, maybe even tranquilized and airlifted out.”

Were the bison sick? Why didn't the refuge dispose of the bison?

They left them there to rot.

Who knows maybe practice for 15 minute cities.

The natives in Lawton were singing that ancient Indian tribute song to the buffalo;
🎶 hey how are you
🎵 hey how are you
🪘 hey how are you
😒

Later in the article, it is stated the refuge employees believed they had no choice. They stated the two buffalo had been roaming outside the refuge for two weeks.

In the article, it says the reporters had a very difficult time to get as close as they did to the dead buffalo. It seems likely the refuge employees had an equally if not more difficult time to get close to the live buffalo.

Buffalo can be extremely dangerous. Perhaps the refuge believed the legal liability of having two extremely dangerous animals, which they were responsible for, on the loose, was too much liability and potential for tragedy.

A car striking one of the buffalo could easily end with multiple people killed.

I’d be tempted to rent a front end loader and dump them in in the wildlife manager’s front yard.

My guess is that they were trying to set him up for poaching charges so they could end up owning his land.

They could have waited until hunting season and sold some raffles for the hunt. More money for refuge, happy hunters , no waste of food.

Unhappy anti-gun nuts.

Thats what I was thinking. I imagine youre familiar with the Hunt for the Hungry program? I cant believe that there wasnt a group of hunters that wouldnt break down and deliver them or a processor that didnt need a write off.

Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day

Wow, what awful wildlife management techniques.

Good question about whether they were ill. I know in Montana and Wyoming, ranchers are concerned about brucellosis being transmitted from bison to cattle herds. Maybe the guys who shot them aren't tasked with disposal and maybe another crew is coming out to dispose of the carcasses. But that doesn't excuse the Fish & Wildlife people for not informing the land owners in advance of what what going on and why.

These wildlife workers should get policing jobs in inner city Philadelphia. There's LOTS of wildlife there that needs to be managed.

“They left them there to rot.”

Buzzards, maggots and coyote scavengers got to eat, too. They won’;t go to total waste.

Herding the buffalo back to the refuge or getting them on/off a truck = “hard work”.
Shooting them and abandoning their carcasses = “little/no work”.
Government employee interactions with animals tend to end in the animals’ deaths. It’s what they do.

Pending full info, I’d guess the “refuge” approximates an Abu Graib standard of care. Animal activists should get involved.

“Perhaps the refuge believed the legal liability of having two extremely dangerous animals”

You probably know more that I do, but is the government really going to be held liable for those two buffalo?

“That’s a years worth of very delicious meat!”

Well, not if they are left to sit out without being butchered quickly. The meat’s foul now.

Exactly. The buzzards provide more than shade from the sun.

does this mean now that if you find Government Employee’s wandering around on your prop0erty instead of being in their assigned compound, you can shoot them to save them???
