Throw-in some bears and wolves, and the clean-up will only be some scattered bones.

You should’a stayed in bed this mornin’, you might have died in a car accident, or a cross fire shoot out between two gangs.

I'm not a rancher or vet, but do bison pose a threat to cows?

I don't know, buffalo have roamed the midwest since the beginning of time, and there is a meat mixing both, called beefalo.

There are hearding animals (border collies) who could have retrieved the much larger animals.

2 weeks or less, and that ravine will be spic & span.

Pending full info, I’d guess the “refuge” approximates an Abu Graib standard of care. Animal activists should get involved.

The refuge is beautiful and natural range, little human development or interface except tourists taking pictures. The buffalo herds there were among the first to bring the numbers back up from near extinction.

As far as your comparison to Abu Ghraib goes, the buffalo were naked.

More perfectly stupid feds. No respect for anyone. They should be lying dead in that dry creek instead of the buffalo. Disciplinary action is required. These people are nuts. It is their responsibility to haul off the carcasses. The height of don’t care to shoot them and leave them and not say a word.

Doesn’t explain or excuse leaving the carcasses on private property.

There doesnt need to be any real danger or hard work for the government employee. It may even cost us taxpayers less if done properly.

A list of volunteers would take care of this kind of thing.
In a place like Oklahoma there has to be a guide or someone responsible enough to be able to kill it. Im sure there are plenty of people willing to break down and pick up for charity. I cant imagine that in Oklahoma there arent a number of nearby custom processors looking for a write off.

If there is some kind of law in that state that stops a volunteer from pulling the trigger then it still would be better for a ranger to have volunteer backups nearby, a mile or so, for safety and to take care of it afterwards.

We used to have where a vehicle struck carcass could be reported and the DNR would let a licensed weasel farmer know to pick it up. There isnt a weasel farmer willing to pay a license? There isnt a taxidermist that could be licensed to process and sell things to split with the department to help fund programs?

Doesnt a university need something like this? No, not regularly but maybe a professor for vets and natural resource students could use a few things and could have a shopping list of wishes. Maybe they could bring some of these students out to participate, something like an OJT opportunity.

There just has to be a better way even if its only marginally better. This way was just about the worst outcome possible other than spending a lot of money to leave the carcass in the guys living room.

They had two weeks notice, they could have called down to the VFW to dispatch a couple of hunters and tell them to bring their coolers and couple of butcher knives.

They didnt need to waste our money and resources just to prove that they could.

In all of Oklahoma there isnt one hungry vet? All the church pantries and soup kitchens are so overwhelmed by donations that the freezers just cant hold any more?

I guess the rest of us are going to have to admit that Oklahoma is just one step from heaven.

“do bison pose a threat to cows?”

I’m not a rancher, farmer or vet, either. But I hear from them here in North Idaho and Western Montana that brucellosis is a serious threat to cattle. I don’t know if this is exaggerated, but I do know it’s a concern.

Worse, why weren’t arrangements made to dress the carcases and get them to a butcher for butchering and provide the meat to the needy?

We are overrun by white tail deer here in North Idaho (like many parts of the country). We’ve got 1,100 square miles of Coeur d’Alene National Forest behind us, yet the deer prefer to come to town for the easy food (and lots of people feed them thinking they are doing the right thing).

Our little town thins the herd every winter. I’ve seen the population go from 26 in our yard in the spring down to two. It is kept very hush-hush, but I understand from a very good and trusted source that the meat is provided to the needy.

They may have been doctored with a medicine not meant for humans.
I had a buddy that raised buffalo for awhile.
They get agitated easily. The pens we worked them in were a lot taller and stronger than cattle pens. Solid walls on all chutes.
They are big angry animals.
Most horses would rather you rope a bull, than be near a buffalo.

That’s no excuse for this trespass and execution on private property. If they had approached the homeowner, I’m sure they would have allowed them to do what needed to be done... but the owners would have insisted they not leave the carcasses to rot on their land... and that’s why they weren’t consulted.

Brucellosis likely, yes.

Brucellosis in buffalo can infect cattle. Not good, causes abortion of unborn calf.
It’s a good excuse for the park rangers to use.

Throw-in some bears and wolves, and the clean-up will only be some scattered bones.

Then you have bears and wolves connecting your property to the food chain.
