This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).
We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

How lovely, to have the scent of lavender all spring and summer as you walk around.
I tried to grow some at the other house, no luck. Unless I dig up all this red clay and put down topsoil, nothing is going to grow easily.
Yes, it is very technical but I think it’s possible to glean some useful information about things that are natural anti-inflammatories.
Some, like turmeric, can be grown as an indoor plant. But you are only going to be able to harvest a minor amount.
Somewhere on my list of things we have to do is build at least a small greenhouse. Moringa turns out to be surprisingly effective for my dear companion Art Ritus. :)

Fortunately, some, like ginger, can be dried and ground up and keep VERY well in the freezer. And there’s candied ginger, too, which would keep indefinitely from what I can see.
Going purely from memory, I think Ephedra is the plant most similar to a steroid. I recall some members of that family are controlled substances, but “Mormon Tea” is legal to grow. You can buy seeds from Richter’s, or from Strictly Medicinals.
Again, that’s entirely from memory, so double-check before trusting it.

Does candying something make it last? I just made a bunch of candied Citrus peel and don’t know how long it will last or if I should refrigerate it.
I tried making my own candied ginger. It did NOT come out like the store stuff.
I’m guessing it should last better because both dehydrating and sugar preserves things. Otherwise, I don’t know.
Among other things it teaches you to make ginger and honey syrup which is quite nice in tea as well as being good for coughs.
(I think that is the book it is in. Party tonight and I do not have the time to pull it and look it up.)

Now that makes sense. I guess I should search and see if the LDS scientists have figured out the shelf life of candied fruit. You never know what’s prepper food.
The advantage of that is that if you store it and get to the point of using it for survival, it would provide a great source of energy when regular sugar is no longer available.
Good point I didn’t think of that. I was thinking more of bartering. Not necessarily with candied lemon peel but I have some Snickers I have put in mylar. Actually some are in a jar with an oxygen absorber. Due to the sake of science, I do sample them every 6 months. So far at about 3 years they are as good as new.
Since we are at a point of still having that stuff available, perhaps it would be worth considering replenishing your supply with fresh stuff. :)
I usually pay extra attention to things and prepping supplies in election years. Who knows what could happen this year?
We will make sure our oil and propane tanks are full and the wood shed is well stocked.
Aside from doing an inventory of canned goods, pasta and rice, baking supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc. I watch for sales constantly and always stock up when a good one happens.

never thought of that, LOL! I thought I would just keep testing. I guess I can do both ;)
I know I’m weak on cleaning supplies, toiletries, and medical supplies.
I think those should be the next topics so I can learn a few things and then go shopping

I have been trying to start soapwort from seeds and having no success.
This can be a problem. I have been prepping for about 40 years. The foodstuffs and chemicals are not too much of a problem to cycle or update, but I have had to give away a lot of MRE’s because I typically buy them several years date exp and before you know it they are looking pretty old. Back when they were $4 or $5 each it wasn’t too painful but at today’s prices it is serious money.

Farmers have taken to the streets en masse in several places in Europe. To ensure MPs hadn’t lost touch with the people and public sentiment, Caroline van der Plas told the Dutch House of Representatives why the massive protests were happening.
Caroline van der Plas is the founder and party leader of the Farmer Citizen Movement (Boer Burger Beweging or “BBB”) and a Member of the Dutch Parliament (“MP”).
Yesterday, she posted a video of a speech she made during an agriculture budget debate. “At its core, this is why farmers are protesting – they are being destroyed,” she tweeted.
Van der Plas’ speech is in Dutch, but independent media outlet Nieuw Rechts has published a write-up which we have reproduced below, adding a video of a farmer’s speech at the end.
