All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

TY to DianaInWisconsin for this week’s topic.

homemade homeopathic cold & flu relief

I figure this is one that’s better to post sooner than later.

If we want we could also discuss fish antibiotics, and which ones to have on hand. I haven’t bought any in some time so I can’t give any links for the places with good prices. But I know somebody in our group knows! You guys usually know everything. This group is a wonderful resource.

homemade homeopathic cold & flu relief. (There is some overlap on these links, but there’s only so much you can do while a cold or the flu runs its course.)

Some of my chicken looks good as is but I think some of it did end up shreddy.

What I didn’t like about the raw pack, which I did with beef, was that it ended up with a partially filled jar and the contents were all compacted into a gelatinous mass in the bottom. I didn’t put much, if any extra water in because when the meat cooks down, it releases water and I didn’t want the jars overflowing. I think if the liquid came out of the jar it would ruin the seal.

So I figured that not adding water would be best. Plus I did try looking up how much water could be added to raw pack but could not find anything anywhere to give me an idea so I could end up with a jar reasonably full of broth but not overflowing.

I make big batches of chicken parm and vacuum seal them. Then on the *What’s for dinner? Let’s open the freezer and see what falls out.* nights, it’s a quick and easy meal to prep for.

“Distilled water will pit even stainless if used by itself...”

The bottom of my C-Pap humidifier chamber is stainless steal and they said to only use distilled water. Which I have done for a long time and no pitting.

That’s interesting because since distilled has no mineral content, it is someone corrosive as stuff leaches into it.

My pots have pits which happened after using distilled water in them.

It’s good to know, though. Thanks.

“I love turnip...”

I like Turnips and Beets. The only thing I didn’t like as a child/teen was Rudebaker & Eggplant & Brussels sprouts . Since I NEVER tried Rudebaker & Eggplant again I don’t know if I would like them now or not. My youngest daughter convinced me to try the Brussel sprouts the way she fixes them and I must say they weren’t bad.

“Did she roast them in the oven?”

No she cut them in half put on whatever seasoning she used and pan sauteed them or used the air fryer. I will have to ask her, but I think it was pan sauteed.

We make our Brussel Sprouts by first frying up bacon cut into about 1” squares.

Take the bacon out of the pan and the put in halved Brussel sprouts and stir fry them for 10 minutes. I add some olive oil if I need more oil.

Then add some sliced or diced onions and stir fry until just soft.

Add the bacon back in, mix, and serve.

My daughter tosses kale leaves in olive oil then adds salt and pepper and roasts them.....better than potato chips! Well, not better than Miss Vicky’s, but better than every other potato chip!

I have been so fortunate as I haven’t caught a cold or flu in a LONG time.

When I did it was drink tea with a little lemon and honey. Rub chest down with Vicks and take tylenol if feverish. Same with the flu.

The only time I have called for a Rx is when a cough got so bad I thought I was going to cough my guts up.
