All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

I’ve made it several ways, I think the easiest was in the oven with the light on. I also tried a Crock-Pot on low but those get way too hot these days. If you have an old one that really is a slow cooker, that might work. I used a thick towel to keep the container from getting near the heated walls. A heating pad might work, you’ll have to play with the temperature settings to see which one is right.

Have decided I don’t care to use any store-bought yogurt as a bacteria source. I just order little envelopes of yogurt starter. Then I save a little from each recipe after that. I think the store bought ones have an odd flavor that gets transferred

Let us know how your adventure goes!

oh, the yogurt can be quite runny so straining it to make Greek yogurt works out pretty well. You don’t end up with a whole lot though.

Thanks for the tips - especially on the starter. Never would’ve thought of that! :)

Thanks! I’m getting chicks this Spring and I’m thinking about breeding my own in the future, so an incubator would solve two problems, LOL! ;)

You’re welcome.

I’m planning my next obsession, making sourdough bread. I’ve been reading about it and have lots of notes. That’s how it begins. LOL! I’m putting off actually getting into it because I still have some unpacking to do and some cabinet measurements to finish.

Disregard my query re washing soda being sad as a king soda .

Do stores like Walmart carry it? Specific brand name? I’ve Never seen any in my grocery stores. But then again I’ve never really looked

Excellent info! Here at my sons no washer and dryer so it’s drag if all to laundromat. But the laundromat is considerably better than dragging all down to the creek and beating clothing on rocks

In past I was a sales associate with Norwex. Lots of good things but pricy. The products for clothes n dishes never really did well IMO. Appearance, odor. Claims of healthier overshadowed by poor results.

The box looks like this. You can find it at most big box stores like Wal*mart. It will be on either the top or bottom shelf as it does not have the advertising budget or mark up.

There are probably other brands but I trust Arm and Hammer.

A box like this used to be about six bucks back in the Before Times but it is now closer to fifteen.

Hello Dolly.....fancy meeting you here lol.

Now, you folk on the Prepper thread are going to think this is crazy, but my daughter, a few years ago, used to do the laundry with nuts lol.

There are certain nuts you can purchase on Amazon (soap nuts laundry detergent) and you put them in a little muslin bag and used them 4 or 5 times. I kid you not.

I don’t know why she stopped using them....probably as the kids got older and dirtier lol. So there you have it, nuts to laundry!

I do make yogurt.

You can use an old crock pot on low with the jars sitting in water and the lid off but the new ones get too hot.

You can also use an Insta-pot.

The longer you let it culture the more sour it will be. Five to six works best for me. Twelve is way too sour and four is just bland.

If you are going to use store bought yogurt for culture use plain and either Fage for Greek or Skyr for Icelandic.

Or you can just buy the cultures.

You will need to drain the yogurt. Because I like to make the thick stuff I put a couple of layers of cheese cloth in a strainer and set it over a bowl and put it in the basement fridge for about 24 hours.

I've gotten all my Super Wash soda from walmart. It's in there next to the borax and other additives. I've never looked in a regular grocery store.

this is the only brand I've ever seen, Arm & hammer.

she sedated him, looked him over well, and had me mix up a pan of warm water and Dawn dish soap and used that to clean his wounds. She says Dawn is a ‘modern miracle invention’ and she uses only that brand when she needs to.

That is truly amazing and wonderful to hear. Especially since gardeners often get dirt into scratches, and that can lead to infections.

I too use chickpeas in a lot of different ways

The bean salad for sure .,,something easy n versatile. In soups for added protein n fiber

Google will give you some great ideas

My overall fav use is as a Mixi sub for refied beans/ base Cook til desired softness. Mash and add mexi-spices Spread on tortilla shell like you would for Refried beans. Add your cheese your protein in tomatoes guac or anything else you like makes a luscious burrito
