NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell called Wednesday for all 30 NFL stadiums to utilize natural grass rather than turf after New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear on Monday night at MetLife Stadium.
ESPN's Adam Schefter posted Howell's statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which he noted that data shows playing on grass instead of turf can help curb "unnecessary injuries."
During the Jets' 22-16 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on New York's fourth offensive play from scrimmage when he was sacked by Leonard Floyd.

The NFLPA is full of crap on this. Turf fields have been notoriously damaging to players for years … and yet the NFLPA never gave a damn in their collective bargaining negotiations before.
They should go on a strike now. Until the NFL agrees to replace the turf in all of their stadiums.
Artificial turf is RACIST!!
Astroturf was just artificial plastice on top of concrete with just some padding underneath. As it got older, the padding wore out. Baseball on artificial turf wasn’t as bad as football, but it was still hard on players’ knees. I can remember football at Busch stadium in St. Louis resulted in many player injuries. The NFL owners pay these guys enough to worry about the field damaging their investment in the players.
Football is meant to be played on grass and without helmets. The latter cuts down on concussions. I’m iffy on mouth protection. /s
I am not sure there are actual statistics showing that on the newer generation of artificial turf. You can’t really put the stuff 30 or 40 years ago in same bag as the new padded turfs.
The new generation is better but it’s still artifical turf. You blow out your achilles and knees because the ground does not give way.
The University where my wife retired had a soccer pitch covered in the latest version of artificial turf. I made it a point to do a little running on it. It felt better than natural ground. There was a good pad under the grass. I can see friction burns, but not a problem with joints or falling. It felt good on my bunged up, arthritic knees and ankles.
But my experiences may not be everyone’s.
16 teams use artificial turf, LA has two teams using same stadium and NYC has two team using same stadium.
Fair enough ... but the NFLPA wasn’t complaining about it 30 or 40 years ago, either.
Arizona plays on natural turf, but surface was horrible during Super Bowl. ( zYeah, I know both sides played on it.)
I agree with this, should have been done a long time ago.
There are many kinds of artificial turf. Astroturf was a particularly awful version.
Natural turf has this habit of suddenly giving way, and can be very hard too where the grass is killed and the soil dried out.
They also didn’t care or say anything cocaine and steroid use…
Give them bread and circuses...
“Fair enough ... but the NFLPA wasn’t complaining about it 30 or 40 years ago, either.”
Absolutely true!
because the ground
I am no doctor but I can imagine playing pro football at 39 make anyone more susceptible to injury.
