Delta frequent fliers livid after Sky Club access limited
New York Post ^ | Sep 15, 2023 | Shannon Thaler

Delta Air Lines has clamped down on access to its Sky Club for Amex card holders — a “terrible business decision” that has angry frequent flyers ready to cut up their cards and pack their bags for another airline.

“I spend at least $60k a year on the card and now I will not have access to lounges. I was mad you wanted me to pay $50. Now no access? You should be falling over backwards for my loyalty in flights and spend,” one furious user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “What a terrible business decision.”

“I will be taking my business elsewhere,” another tweeted. “As a Platinum member who frequently travels internationally, I am disappointed with the new lounge and miles standards.”

Delta’s new terms affect travelers with American Express’ Platinum, Business Platinum, Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business cards who, as of Feb. 1, 2025, will no longer get unlimited access to the airline’s airport lounges in the three hours leading up to departure.

Delta Reserve and Delta Business Reserve cardholders, who pay a $550 annual fee, will be restricted to 10 visits to Delta’s Sky Club per year, though infinite access can be unlocked by spending $75,000 within one year.......

Though the airline hasn’t disclosed the reason for the changes, Delta has struggled to handle overcrowding at popular lounges at Delta’s major hubs like JFK Airport or Atlanta, which have become beloved for offering free food and beverages, more comfortable seating and greater security.

“...who can afford to plunk down $75K per year...”

You would be AMAZED at the number of government employees flying around the word with their government supplied AMEX card. There are literally MILLIONS of them living high on the hog and globe trotting around the planet courtesy of our tax dollars. Trump understood this and wanted to end the gravy train for these lazy, unelected and unaccountable slobs which is just one more reason gubmint employees hate him.

Ooh, I didn’t hear about that one. What did they tell GA to do?

I spent a lot of time in USO lounges in my 30 years of military duty. Quiet, not often overcrowded, and when it was, we were all considerate of each other. Never saw anybody pull rank or be a jerk. We all saw it as a privilege. Denver was my favorite.

True, but those clubs cost a bunch to stock and man. Free booze, best food, etc….American Airlines is once again in deep doo- doo, if they are, the other two United and Delta must also be experiencing financial difficulties.

I see it as a cost cutting measure, a Harbinger. The last airline wipe out ( around 2006) saw the industry consolidated down to three majors. Their creative accounting may show profits, but behind the scenes shows major concern down the road. Checking current fares, the average Joe has a hard time purchasing tickets.

I enjoyed my Icelandair trips.
Hot stewardesses and I had the whole row both ways…

The problem is that the free food & beverages are costing them a lot more in Biden’s economy. They recognized that it was no longer financially feasible. Perhaps if the took off the restrictions , and started charging for the food & drinks, both would be happy. But do it in a way that they know why it is happening. At least then the will understand why.

I fly often and hate all the stupid elite clubs and lounges. Just simplify flying. Put the lounge money into better pilot training and roomier cabins.

The one time I was in an airport lounge, it was almost as noisy as not being in one. One guy talked as loudly as he could doing business in between flights, and he didn’t care how many people heard him. It actually gave me a headache, which I rarely get. He talked for over an hour straight, as loud as hell, going from one call to another. Unfortunately, we had paid to go in there, or I would have gone to go sit among the regulars like I otherwise do.

Former NFL QB Tom Brady was on CNBC Business News a couple days ago with the CEO of Delta, who just hired Brady to do some kind of job that neither Brady or the CEO could coherently explain.

I was really scratching my head after that interview.

Looks like "Brady Job One" will be trying to soothe the outrage of hundreds of Delta high rollers who have been kicked out of Sky Club!

Delta’s not ready when you are.

It’s a different kind of lounge, altogether!!

I have never been to Asia. I take it you’re from Singapore?

What are some good destinations that aren’t overdone?
I’m not looking for packed cities or getting drunk at night.
More culture and nature trips.

I am from Alabama, my wife is Chinese and I lived in Asia for many years. My children grew up in Hong Kong.

Every where is crowded in Asia. But I’d start with Bangkok. It has its seedy areas but lots that isn’t. It is also reasonably priced. If you go to Ching Mai in North Thailand there is a lot of neat stuff including the Bridge Over the River Quai.

I have yet to see anywhere that does not accept Visa but takes Amex. But plenty refuse to take Amex. I don’t see the point of paying to have an Amex card.

Just to get the silver membership, you will need to spend $60K a year with Delta. Good luck getting into that club.
