Florida town overrun with peacocks turning to vasectomies to control population

PINECREST, Fla. (WFOR) – A suburban Florida town overrun with peacocks has come up with a solution to its overpopulation.

The male birds in Pinecrest, Florida, will be getting vasectomies.

Residents have complained the fowl are scratching their roofs and cars, making messes on their driveways, and their squawks are a nuisance.

The procedure on one bird can stop between six to 12 females from reproducing.

The Miami-Dade County commissioners approved the plan and are launching the pilot program in a few weeks.

A county commissioner says if the plan works in Pinecrest, they may use it in other communities, such as South Miami and Coral Gables.

I rather like peacocks. They are loose all over the SF Zoo. I even like how they sound. They stroll along the paths among the visitors, apparently without a care in the world.

A teaching moment for my daughter (she was three), was when a peacock sneaked up on her and stole a cookie out of her hand. Trauma.

Only some are peacocks. Half are peahens. Asa group they are called peafowl.

Capons are actually neutered. If you did that to the peacocks, they might revert to female plumage. Personally, I’d whack a couple of them for tying flies

They must be assuming a lot of the male birds are not getting any action. If that is the case, the plan will only work if they give vasectomies to the male birds getting all the action. If all the male birds are in on the action, what good will it do if you only sterilize part of them?

Do what they do with wild goose eggs…coat them with vegetable oil-it thins the eggshells and they don’t hatch.

The heads make small targets. It’s much easier to hit the neck which stuns them. A 2X2 finishes the problem.
