Criminals stream movies, play video games and make playlists on ‘prison iPads’

Prisoners are streaming Hollywood hits, curating Spotify-style playlists and getting access to popular video games thanks to an explosion in iPad-style tablets inside institutions across the country.

One company alone is providing devices to 600,000 inmates, nearly one-third of estimated 1.9 million people in US jails and prisons.

The ubiquitous tablets, which are still growing in popularity, were highlighted by a series of topless pictures of South Carolina murderer Alex Murdaugh, who used the device to make video calls directly from his cell.

California – the nation’s second-biggest state correctional department – became the latest this month to complete a program expanding their use to 32 state prisons, including San Quentin and Folsom, where Johnny Cash made history in 1968.

easier than sedating them. Simply stupefy the prison population the same way the world population is being stupefied.

This has always been my backup/retirement plan, free housing, meals, and healthcare. I can just workout and read the day away.

“Justin Paperny, founder of White Collar Advice, said tablets provide inmates across the country a chance to learn new technology and better prepare themselves for their eventual release dates.”

Thats some real alternate reality thinking right there.

Hard data proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that what cuts prison recidivism rates more than anything is a real faith and relationship in Jesus Christ.......and it ain’t even close.

What the prison systems are really hoping to do is pacify the inmates to mitigate violence.

Interesting fact about these prison iPad-like tablets: They're in a clear case so the guards can see nothing else is being smuggled or hidden inside.

Right out of Raising Arizona -—

“I see a whole bank robbery crime spree in the southwest until I got enough money to retire in Mexico or we get caught... either way, we’re set for life!”

“easier than sedating them.”

Yep. Back in the day (’70s) one of my five divisions responsibilities was maintenance of the County Sheriffs electronics.

When I first took over the Sheriff invited me to a meeting where one of his points was to emphasize that his highest priority for me was response time for his prisoners jail TV should it ever go out.

Nuff said.

That will be a very select few.
Most of the ChemE and EEs I went to school with weren’t that good at programming.
I think most programmers are born rather than just learned the skill.

I'd tend to agree. My niece has a seven year old boy who got suspended from electronics because he figured out how to hack into the school system and change his grade.

Seven years old! Second grade. You can't teach kids that kind of skillset so young.

The school system screwed up suspending him. They should've put him in an advanced class to develop that kind of talent!

How in the world does this “just happen” like this? Why didn’t the public have a say - the ones who were victimized?
