An Arizona woman was rushed to the hospital on Monday after she was gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park.
The incident occurred in the morning near the Lake Lodge Cabins on the north shore of Yellowstone Lake, according to a release by the park.
"The female was walking with another individual in a field in front of the Lake Lodge when they saw two bison. Upon seeing them, the visitors turned to walk away from the bison. One of the bison charged and gored the woman," the release read.
She suffered "significant injuries to her chest and abdomen and was transported by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center," the release added.
It has not been confirmed how close the people were to the animal when it attacked, but the park states people should stay more than 25 yards away from bison.
"When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals — bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes — and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in proximity," according to the release.
"During mating season (rut) from mid-July through mid-August, bison can become agitated more quickly. Use extra caution and give them additional space during this time."
The incident is still under investigation, and it is the first since June 28, 2022.
Yes, it was the highlight of the day.
Bison don't see very well past forty or fifty yards so anything that gets too close is perceived as a threat and they respond aggressively. That's how they've survived for thousands of years. That was one bison and one human. Imagine a herd of them.
I sat on the steps of a lodge ( don’t know which) at Yellowstone…eating chili in the snow.
I never considered it might be bison chili
Feeeling sorry for myself…..we pulled into the campground…everyone else was pulling out?
It was end of May and snowing hard……and stayed cold and snowy most of the week,
No internet, no TV, freezing cold in a clamper.
Nothing wrong with liking what you like.
I almost entirely eat grass fed lamb for meat now.
It tastes and smells a bit different, but I think it’s healthier.
Of course it might be unhealthier and just more expensive...
These people are called “tourons” (tourist morons) on National Park websites.
I knew a man in our wagon train that rode one like that. It was HUGE!
My trail horse was a Leopard Appaloosa that was a former barrel horse. He was the BEST trail horse, but he had one problem. He was a drunk. He loved beer and tried to take the beer away from people. We don’t drink but a lot on the wagon trains do. That was the best horse I ever had.
Yep. I was there recently and traffic was stopped for about 30 minutes. We assumed it was road construction, but after we started driving again found that it was bison hanging out on the road… it was kind of fun being just feet from them while being safe in the car. Same thing happened with black bears.
Also saw people getting waaaay to close to wild animals. No surprise someone got gored.
I got a decent sized scar on my arm from that one time I ran up to pet a kodiak bear in alaska. They don’t like to be startled
I’m w/ you. For me, all game exc. quail and pheasant is called “adventure meat”. Beef, chicken and ribs any day.
“A few years of plenty of buffalo would often be followed by years of buffalo in short supply.”
Old indian bad news/good news joke.
Chief to tribe after a bad hunting season: “The bad news this winter is all we have to eat is buffalo shit, but the good news is there are plenty of buffalo”.
Figure it out!😀
We're pathetic in the size-to-strength ratio.
Our brains allow our bodies to be fragile while still remaining atop the food chain.
Great that you have such a wonderful skill with those critters! Last time I was on a horse..oh I don’t maybe 1951...it took off at a gallop on me. Fortunately, this tenderfoot was able to hold on for dear life until a wrangler was able to bring the beast under control. Have been terrified of riding ever since!🙂
If you bring a couple of steel pans and hammers in buffalo land, just bang on the pan. It hurts the heck out of their ears. Works on bears too.
