Dog Behavioral issue.... Advice sought.
7/10/2023 | By Laz A. Mataz

My dog has a behavioral issue, and gets loose from time to time and kills cats... two so far. This is something that is making neighbors angry, obviously. Clearly the dog cannot stay here.

She is also perhaps the stupidest dog I have ever owned and is completely untrainable. We have successfully housebroken her. However, for the eating ritual, she WAS sitting when commanded, and began eating on the release command 'Okay', but she forgot half that training and now just stares at you when you release her.

Obviously we would never be able to train her not to kill cats.

I want to exhaust every option before I put her down. Is such a dog someone I want to give up to a shelter / rescue? Or is it best to just put her down?

can you put in a pen or a fence?
We adopted a Whoodle from a neighbor and i have never had a dog with such a high prey drive.

The squirrels and bunnies are getting a lawyer.

How is your dog able to kill any owned cat? Does he has door unlocking tools?

I’m for killing feral cats.

It was likely not properly socialized as a pup. It will not improve.

This may sound harsh to some, but a couple of major beatings early on may have set her straight. Probably too late now for that approach.

I got my dog from a rescue. Some of the rescue listings noted that the dog in particular would not be suitable for a home with cats. We brought a cat to meet the dog and see how she reacts before deciding to take her home.

You might contact a local rescue and ask them if they can rehome the dog to a suitable home. Or advertise on a website like Nextdoor and state that the dog cannot go to a home with cats.

Yes. It needs a good size pen or a leash line to be attached when it is outside.

I had a dog that kept killing my chickens.

I know it sounds cruel, but it worked, I duct taped the dead chicken to the side of its head for the day. After that it avoided chickens!

“Don’t do the electric fence. I saw a show on a dog that was startled and it went through the electric fence. However, everytime it tried to return it would get a shock. It ended up dying on the street because it couldnt get home.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That is by far the exception as opposed to the rule. You have to train the dog by taking it to the border till it gets a shock. The dog will learn REAL fast.

Obviously we would never be able to train her not to kill cats.

We have found a shock collar to be very effective at training out bad habits. You dont use the shock feature for anything other than the bad habit or it will confuse the dog. But I might suggest, with a cat subject behind a safe barrier or cage, shocking the dog as it approaches the cat. We have done this to train or dog not to approach snakes or other wild animals. Very quickly it should learn to avoid cats altogether. Of course, your mileage may vary.

That’s horrible : (
I would suggest giving it to a rescue and leather know the issues. I agree with the other poster that a large rural property might be best. Killing cats is terrible, but it doesn’t make it a bad dog.

I’m in a house rental and it would be expensive to install a fence, besides, the landlord doesn’t want one.

I don’t have time for that. I need to do something within the next 1-2 weeks.

Maybe a regular wood fence would better.

I tried Nextdoor when she killed the first cat. Not even one nibble.

I have her on a lead, but she has escaped her collar and her harness so far, multiple times for both.

I had a black lab that my young son asked me “Can dogs be retarded?”

I have a yellow lab that I have to introduce myself to every morning.

Not if it is homed properly. My dog isn’t anywhere except home and outside on a leash at all times. No chance to kill anything. All dogs have the potential to kill small animals that’s their instinct. They need proper training and housing. I would urge you to find a rescue— they can easily work with these issues.
