Readers respond: Do Black lives really matter in Portland?
The Oregonian ^ | April 16, 2023 | By Letters to the editor

Last year in Portland, 47 Black Portlanders were murdered, 11 Latino Portlanders, and 2 Asian Portlanders. Sixty out of 101 homicides in Portland – the whitest big city in the country – were of people of color.

In almost every neighborhood or business around town you can find a “Black Lives Matter” sign. But do Black lives really matter in Portland, or is it just a slogan that makes people feel good?

We need mental health professionals, businesses, police, the district attorney, faith leaders, and street level outreach workers to name a few to come discuss what is working and what isn’t. More importantly we need a commitment of at least $20 million a year focused on addressing the homicides of Portlanders of color.

We can’t continue to ignore the overwhelming harm and trauma to Portlanders of color. Only until we put our money and resources where they are desperately needed, can we truly say “Black Lives Matter”.

BLM was a top-down radical politics street-agitation movement. Obama’s brownshirts or red guards, founded by Eric Holder with protection of the DOJ.

Black lives have to matter to blacks themselves before anything will change.

Do we have similar stats on who committed the murders?

Also, notice the shift between murder and homicides in the stats given. How many were murders vs. accidents or justifiable homicides.

“More importantly we need a commitment of at least $20 million a year focused on addressing the homicides of Portlanders of color.”

If this was to hire and train additional law enforcement for Portland - and to address courts/judges who turn criminals loose to commit more crimes, I’d be all for it.

Instead I’m sure the paper doesn’t have any of that in mind for the “important commitment” they think is so important.

That’s the bit nobody wants to go into.
Because that’s where the blame lies.

No you don't. You need to get the colored people of Portland to obey the law and respect people and property. Oh, and to stop killing each other. See, I saved taxpayers $20million.

Good summary.

And they have gotten a lot of black people killed. The black community fails to recognize the facts on this. It is a sad state of affairs.

The way I read it, the letter writer was asking for the money to go to the black victims not crime fighting efforts. It’s scam. Portland has fallen into anarchy. Nothing will change the direction of Portland except martial law and mass arrests.

Certainly not to other blacks.

Just look at how they fight to be allowed to kill their babies.

Portland and Seattle are occupied by the most racist folks I’ve ever witnessed. What they say is so contrary to how they feel, it’s a psychological sickness. That goes for most of the progressive utopian citadels all around our nation.

$20 million is shockingly low. Why, that wouldn’t pay reparations to but four black people in San Francisco.
