Rooty the Great Root Bear, the mascot of A&W Restaurants for 60 years, will hence forth be wearing denim jeans.
In a Twitter post, the company suggested that Rooty’s lack of pants was “polarizing.”
“America, let’s talk. Since 1963, Rooty the Great Root Bear has been our beloved spokesbear. We knew people would notice because he’s literally a 6-foot tall bear wearing an orange sweater,” the company said. “But now we get it – even a mascot’s lack of pants can be polarizing.”
Moving forward, Rooty will wear be wearing jeans. The company said Rooty will still remain the company’s official “spokesbear” despite the update. …

Yogi’s next. All he wears is a tie.
Oh good, maybe now Rooty can give Jeffrey tubin some advice about keeping his pants up.
Of course it’s dumb and silly, but the plus side of this discussion is free advertising. You have people talking about your product, about your logo and marketing plans, and all for the low costs of some orange or yellow plastic shorts!
Now a bear can just deficate in his pants rather than the woods.
I didn’t even think A&W was in business. Their restaurants and food is garbage.
Donald Duck will be next. He wears that navy jacket and sailing cap but he never wears pants!
Also - Pluto is Mickey Mouse’s pet dog who walks on 4 legs and can’t talk. Meanwhile, Goofy is Mickey’s friend, but he is also a dog, but he walks on 2 legs like a human and he also talks like a human. What the hell is going on???
The Bee couldn’t have made this one up.
I live in the city where A&W has its headquarters, and it’s plain to see that the company is in trouble.
Before the pandemic, they had three restaurants here. Now only one is still open.
I think it will take more than putting pants on the bear to turn the company’s fortunes around.
When I was a kid in the ‘70s, A&W was hands-down my favorite fast food. The root beer in their frosty glass mugs was so delicious and seemed so fancy compared to the paper cups at McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, etc. Their burgers and fries were quite tasty too.
This “put pants on the bear” thing seems more like a cry for publicity than actual woke-ism.
I used to eat at one, back in the 60s (yeah, that long ago) and I thought the food was good. I don’t know if it’s even still there.
A&W is actually by far the best Root Beer!
And it makes the BEST root beer float when combined with 1901 vanilla
“lack of pants was “polarizing.”
Rooty is not white, just sayin’.
White M&M’s... They don’t have any. Should white people be offended? Or should people of color be offended because they are being separated from whites?
I really wish I had nothing else going on in my life and I had time to worry about trivial things like chocolate candies, and and a cartoon bear. Must be nice. I have to go shovel some climate change out of my driveway now.
Goofy needs to be put up on cultural appropriation charges.
Rooty is not white, just sayin’.
Another let’s talk from a company. No thanks.
In 2002 A&W was bought back from by Yum! Brands, which owns Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Habit Burger and Long John Silver’s.
YUM! had built a bunch of “co-brand” stores — I’ve got an A&W/KFC store a couple miles from me, and that meant the A&W menu was competing in the same building with another brand.
Franchisees ganged up and took the brand back from YUM! and have been improving it since. As it’s a franchise operation, you will find some variation from one store to another, but I’ve not been to an A&W that’s actually BAD.
Mickey Mouse wears pants, but Donald Duck does not. Why isn’t this an issue?
