Ancient Fossil Unearthed Near Downtown Kansas City, Missouri

Two men discovered an ancient bison skull while scavenging near downtown Kansas City, Missouri, in mid-January.

Mike Ruth and Dave Jamerson were poking around the waterways of the Missouri River, looking for artifacts, fossils, cool stuff like that, when they found what they first thought might have been a piece of driftwood, according to KCTV5. As they lifted the piece from the silt, they realized they had “something really cool,” as Ruth told the outlet.

“I immediately thought bison,” Jamerson commented. The fossil was covered in silt and zebra mussels as they unearthed it, but came out of the dirt almost fully complete.

Metropolitan Community College’s Chair of Social Sciences and President of the KC Archeological Society Dr. Melissa Eaton told KCTV that the fossil may belong to a now-extinct mammal that was significantly larger than the modern buffalo. The ancient bison antiquus was 25% bigger than the modern bison, and could weigh up to 3,500 pounds, according to the National Park Service.

“Ten thousand years ago, they were a dominant species in this area,” Eaton told the outlet.

Hunting for fossils and other ancient artifacts is an old but rapidly growing hobby for many. A recent Joe Rogan guest, John Reeves, set off a series of hunts for an alleged treasure trove of artifacts dumped into New York’s East River by the American Museum of Natural History in 1949.

Too much trouble to find an ancient fossil that way when there’s one in the WH.

Very cool find, thanks for posting it. Wme and brother were caretakers on a bison ranch. The owner would come up on weekends, and me and brother woild take care of the animals during the week. They are a massive beast, and capable of incredible speed and agiltiy for such a big animal. I can’t Imagine how massive and powerful the ancient ones must have been up close and personal. The bull in the Herd we took care of would toss a large hay feeder tacked to a trailer that was longer than a car around d like a toy. So much power.

The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is a small freshwater mussel. The species originates from the lakes of southern Russia and Ukraine, but has been accidentally introduced to numerous other areas and has become an invasive species in many countries worldwide. Wikipedia

The Army kept a herd at Fort Riley, north of Funston, for many years. We were driving some Duece-N-Half multipurpose trucks up there to set up some field exercise camps and the buffalo would charge the trucks. Very aggressive and not afraid of anything.

They are very aggressive- We had to give each one of them silage every day in long 1/2 barrels but length-wise, and the bull woudl follow us every time and attack the buckets, flipping them over- and butting his head at us when we reached into the pen- to feed them the hay- The others never got to eat theirs out of the barrels lol

we had to have a hose to squirt at the bull as he liked to try to keep us inside the barn in the doorway- we didn’t have to turn it on after awhile, as he woudl see it and back off- but gettign the hay out to the feeder was always nerve wracking-

I was tarring the barn roof once, and got a dollop of tar behind me on the downside of the roof- and didn’t’ see it- my foot hit it and down i went- 2 1/2 stories, right into one of the pens- fortunately only the younger ones were up in that part of the pens- they came over to see what all the fuss was about- I was able to crawl out before the older cows and the bull made their way up to the pen- The young ones got pretty close- and i wasn’t sure how they were gonna react- but they were fine- my legs didn’t want to move at first- and i thought of all kinds of scenarios, but after a minute or two, which seemed like forever- , i was able to move them and crawl out- the older ones were about 200 yards way by then- thankfully they didn’t run-

The owner said “Did you dock yourself the 15 minutes”? Lol-

That place was a curse lol (Not really, but some pretty major things happened there-)- Hit my face with a chainsaw- (That was my fault though, as was falling off the roof) almost gouged my eye out and nose off with the chainsaw- tip hit an end on a log, and shot up into my face- had no safety stop on the chain- , and the place burned down on one particular night that was super windy-

The fire inspector said it was either mice that gnawed the wires in the attic, or a spark that got blown under the roof shingles, or onto the side of the house upstairs, and caught the house on fire because of all the wind - (the fire broke out in the upstairs that wasn’t used- only way we knew was because a driver stopped and told us the roof was on fire- we were eating supper and watching TV at the time)- like idiots- we grabbed 5 gallon pails and tried to put the fire out, but by then it was too late- the whole upstairs ceiling was on fire-

i had just painted the place that summer too- oil paint- went up very fast- it was an old historic stagecoach stopover hotel, many years old- had a bunch of Stickley furniture in it too-

Thankfully the fire didn’t break out a few hours later- we would have been sleeping had it done so-

I’d prefer to recover the cannon dumped into the Mississippi River near Jefferson Barracks. According to records there are dozens of them there, both iron and bronze.

I grew up South of Lawton, Oklahoma, on the Red River and read often of Army and USAF recruits going to Mt. Scott and acting stupidly around the bison there and subsequently getting schooled by them. I also worked on ranches nearby that had them too and knew of their danger.

I got a night call to see a cow in distress from an aged rancher so I headed out to his farm. I saw the cow in the pasture at dusk so I got my jack and bag and headed out to her. It got dark but I was on the ground mutating the foetus so I could deliver it and something licked the back of my neck. I though it another cow but I turned around to see the head of a bison bull staring at me. I figured I was dead so I just as might go ahead and die doing my job. I got the calf pulled and the bison just stood there watching me. I finished up and headed to the gate as quickly as I could where I met the old farmer who informed me that he also had several bison...I went home and cleaned out my shorts..
