HELP!!! Kidney Stone. How do I lessen the pain and pass quickly?

As a Christian who has not had to get medical help except once (speck of rust lodged in eye) in about the last 40 years (now 70) thanks be to God, but not because I am against prayerfully getting medical help, then I would pray to pass, drink some ACV, mover around, maybe swing on some swings, and sink in a hot hot bath. I do get gall bladder attacks if I eat much after going too log without eating

But here is a collection of most of the advice of 150 responses from the FR medical hotline in order of posting - NOT viability rating or recommending any for sure:

* Advil extra-strength pop them like candy.

* handled with ultrasonic destruction

* Drink lots of water

* Avoidance of the medical-industrial...lots of water and/or fruit juices

* apple cider vinegar mixed with water fixes EVERYTHING. diluted

* suggest rethinking your position on seeing a medical professional.

* Go the clinic or hospital

* Water and Cranberry juice. Ibuprophen to reduce any swelling.

* PURE cranberry juice.

* Go to a hospital.

* When to seek urgent care: If get severe pain not controlled with ibuprofen. worse symptoms or unable to tolerate oral fluids / medicine.

* Get in a bathtub with the hottest water as you can stand.. and take some extra strength Tylenol. Drink tons of water Also try drinking straight lemon juice

* drink a large amount of watermelon juice.

* Do not pop advil like candy particularly with a kidney that may be obstructed and poorly functioning.

* visit to the local ER. Any fever and you need to be seen emergently. Beyond that do NOT take any over the counter pain medicine beyond the recommended dose, if your kidney function is impaired any advil, aleve etc is too much

* Massive amounts of vitamin C. Vinegar. Citrus fruits and juices.

* Go to the ER, and get some medical help.

* You’ll need to see a doctor. Stop drinking soda and use lots of citrus.

* do a quick Google search on apple cider vinegar mixed with water for kidney stones.

* In a medical emergency, come to Free Republic and put your health in the hands of people who have no clue what they’re talking about.

* take whatever strong pain meds you have and include an anti-inflammatory to reduce whatever swelling may be present. Hold a heating pad/hot water bottle on the area, too. I would take 1-tablespoon shots of straight apple cider vinegar every 30 minutes or so and chase with water.

* My wife is a retired RN, and apple cider vinegar was the basic treatment of choice for most patients without fever or severe pain in their busy clinic.

* NSAIDS can help with pain and inflammation if you can tolerate them. Tamsulosin, generic for Flomax, can help stones pass from the lower portion of the ureter, but requires a prescription. Even if your pain subsides, you can’t assume that the stone is gone, and should have X-ray evaluation.

* Lemonade. My son has had a few large kidney stones and his Dr told him to drink lots of lemonade to help break the stone up. He did end up having to get it zapped

* You are never going to know which method is going to work best, quickest, fastest -- Lithotripsy vs Ureteroscopy -- unless you go see a doctor, and if you have a GP you trust....ONE of those methods is GOING to work, ok? The push-fluids group means well, not a bad idea, but if you are at total blockage, push-fluids can backfire on your kidneys

* You are low in magnesium...Good for you not getting sucked back into the medical system

* I don’t know what to tell you, but NO ibuprofen.

* I’d recommend a starter dose of 10 mg hydrocodone or oxycodone followed in close order with a quart of water, 2 diet sodas and 2 beers....If the ureter is blocked you’re in for a bout of hydronephrosis. It’s usually back pain that isn’t back pain and nausea, the hydronephrosis and it’s symptoms will disappear as soon as the kidney can drain. If urineis dark brown it’s from the kidney, if it’s red it’s not likely from the kidney but the ureter, bladder or urethra. Get a solo cup and pee in it so you’ll know if you pass it. If you have blockage in the ureter you’re headed for surgery regardless of what you want.

* For an acute attack I’d advise seeking medical help immediately, it would be foolish not to. In the future always remain well hydrated at all times and supplement with magnesium.

* The issue is you can’t tell by the pain. The only way you will know is getting an ultrasound. Or CT scan.

* And no ibuprofens if you are on blood thinners. Advising anyone to take even over the counter meds is dangerous.

* Vicodin, oxy or any pain killer derived from what God created, like Opium

* Ultra sound and Tamsulosin (Flomax) Or the wives tale - drink a cup of olive oil...

* I deal with kidney stones on a regular basis. If you can tolerate Ibuprofen, take 800mg, not to exceed 2400mg in 24hr. Now, for the fun part which, though it may seem silly, actually speeds things along... Pace the floor, walking with as heavy a step as you can manage. You will feel the stone moving. Gravity, and your heavy footed movement will help get the stone through the ureter to the bladder. Once the stone is in the bladder, the worst is over. Drink as much water as you can tolerate. Once you feel the urge to empty your bladder, hold it as long as you can. Volume and pressure will help you pass the stone from your body.

* not silly at all- that’s what i do as i can’t sit or lay down- so i grab my crutches and walk in circles aroudn the kitchen island bar- kidney stones absolutely drain me of strength, and by the end, I’m in need of crutches just to stand and keep moving-

* There is support for administration of ibuprofen for kidney stones -- at least one study out there: ... * what helped my wife: at home: drink plenty of water and liquids. ibuprophen in this case worked like magic for her ureter pain. if you go to the doctor, prescription flowmax.

* Had to go through my back to get them. Woke up and I had two catheters. One in my back and the other in the normal spot.

* Many urgent care centers can now do CT scans, so you may not have to go to an ER to get started. In the meantime, hydrating and a single dose of an anti-inflammatory like advil or aleve as directed may help and shouldn’t be dangerous unless you have other reasons not to take them. Nothing will dissolve a stone that is already in your ureter enough to make any difference, unless it is a very small one, and you have no way to know that without a CT or ultrasound.

* Drink as much water as you can hold. Then drink more. Repeat, and keep it up. Ask a friendly doctor for a prescription for Toradol (the generic form works just fine)... A doctor will resort to surgery/lithotripsy as a last resort.

* The tang suggestion comes from a guy that did appliance repairs. Tang broke down calcium according to him.

* I once passed a gallstone by strenuous exertion...climbing a stepladder with buckets of concrete.

* We talked about my diet and I told him I drank 3-4 Diet Cokes everyday & he said if I didn’t want anymore, to stop drinking them. Haven’t had a Coke since & I go in every 6 months for x-rays and check up. So far so good.

* Haven’t seen any responses (in the first 50) that mentioned utilizing a hot tub. A friend of mine says he has used a hot tub with a jets aimed at the painful areas to break them up. Try that if you are not spending the time going to the hospital!!!

* I have used aspirin to help with kidney stone pain. After the last boulder about 12 years ago, I started drinking 2 large glasses of lemon-aid per week. I have not had a recurrence.

* If you go to the ER, you’ll pay a fortune and call they’ll give you is pain meds. Been there and done that.

* 1 TABLESPOON ACV to 8oz glass water or a bit more ACV for ailments needing curing. It's MORE palatable cold if you add an ice cube or two. Don't drink it non-diluted because it has the potential to mildly burn your mouth, throat or esophagus. ADDING 1 TEASPOON OF HONEY is a huge bonus for daily maintenance.

* My mother-in-law told me the first time to drink four cold 12 ounce original coca colas in a two hour period followed immediately by a can of aspaagus or the equivalent of fresh asparagus. Three times the stone was gone by the time I finished he asparagus. once I had to repeat the treatment and then it worked. I odon’t “pass” them. They dissolve.

* To keep the ureter from kinking and cramping, avoid lying down, if possible. Reduce the ‘slack’ in the ureter (’lawn hose’) by placing your hands on the chair you’re seated on (arms strait down so hands at your hips) and lock your elbows to elevate your shoulders. I wanted as much elevation as possible so I stuffed boos/pillows in a wing-back chair on either side of me for me (to elevate my hands another 4” off the base of the chair) and braced myself on those. With elbows locked it took 15 minutes of agony before the ureter ‘unkinked’ and the relief from pain was so shocking I almost blacked out (feel forward) so make sure someone is near until that happens or you could end up with a skull fracture.

* Seek professional medical help. Home remedies may cause more harm than good.

* Don’t drink diet soda. Drink lots of water.

* Ultrasonic lithotripsy often doesn't always work and can damage your kidneys. When it didn't work for me after two tries, another urologist stepped in, said it could be potentially damaging and took different path.

* The procedure that worked for me several times was ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy where a laser is used to blast the stone into pieces that will pass. The downside to that is that it feels like your pissing glass for several days due to the irritation of scope going up and back out your johnson.

* I use two tylenol and one Motrin together to deal with severe pain. I make myself take it only twice a day since tylenol can harm the liver in high dosings. The cranberry juice takes about a day to give relief but it does work.

* I’d avoid ibuprofen etc. They often don’t dance well with kidneys. The thing with kidney stones is location- and without a CT or ultrasound you won’t know.

My kidney stone is 8 mm. I keep praying it doesn’t drop. They said it was high in the kidney but who knows if that just means it will be even bigger when it drops.

Q1 - if it gets bigger, will it be too big to drop?

Q2 - Do doctors allow an 8 mm kidney stone to drop or do they break it up with ulterasound.

They use lasers now.

It’s known as lasertripsy.

You should study up on what NOT to eat that is inducing these stones. You should also get your calcium level of your blood checked out. It’s possible your parathyroid, which regulates the calcium level in your blood, is not working correctly so get that checked out, too.

Gonna depend on the size of the stone(s). Most pass naturally after moving through the kidney. The stone moving in the kidney is the cause of pain.

Had one in college. It passed naturally.

Urologist said it was common in the south. He advised to drink a lot of fluids to help prevent others.

They can, depending on the type and severity. My daughter has been dealing with them for years; there is no real easy way from what I’ve been told

All I know is I’m very glad to have never had one.

I developed an infection in my urinary tract. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days and they sent me home with a strainer to catch the busted up stones to be analyzed.

Mine was about that size. They busted mine up with a laser.

Excess vitamin c causes kidney stones.

Excess vitamin c can be converted to oxalic acid. Stones are made of oxalic acid.

Morphine: if you can get it.

Booze??

Sonic; like lithotripter?

Had that - felt like guido and the boys worked me over with a baseball bat or two.

Next treatment years later used a laser endoscope thingy. MUCH better results!
