Experienced a kidney stone 25 years ago. Doctor at that time went in invasively to get it and remove
Three nights ago, I was struck with another kidney stone attack. Lasted about 2 hours in the middle of the night.
24 hours later. Another one. Could feel the pain and the stone moving farther south.
Another one early this morning, still painful but I believe stone is making progress.
Refuse to go to any clinic or hospital, what do my wise freeper friends suggest to speed up the process and alleviate the pain.
I have dealt with small kidney stones four times in the last 25 years. My mother-in-law told me the first time to drink four cold 12 ounce original coca colas in a two hour period followed immediately by a can of aspaagus or the equivalent of fresh asparagus. Three times the stone was gone by the time I finished he asparagus. once I had to repeat the treatment and then it worked. I odon’t “pass” them. They dissolve.
I made it half way home when my ulcer blew up. It was in the days before cell phones were common. I collapsed by the truck before I could reach the pay phone. It was spitting sleet and that got me going again to get to the phone to call my wife to come get me.
I threw up stuff I didn’t know was in me but no blood fortunately, the doc was at a Christmas party and would have met me but I didn’t want to bother him so I spent the night dehydrating. By the time I went in that morning my blood was more like grease. That was nearly 40 years ago.
Home remedies are all very well but why rule out, right from the get, the attention and expertise of medical professionals?
They can at least SEE it and tell you if it’s going to kill you in a week, by kidney failure or internal bleeding or gangrene.
I’d start there and worry about their integrity after they take pictures.
The kidney stones are spiked so there will be some ‘poking’ pain as they move. However, the severe pain (for women) occurs in between the duct (ureter) between the kidney and the bladder when the stone get’s stuck and the ureter becomes kinked like a lawn hose.
To keep the ureter from kinking and cramping, avoid lying down, if possible. Reduce the ‘slack’ in the ureter (’lawn hose’) by placing your hands on the chair you’re seated on (arms strait down so hands at your hips) and lock your elbows to elevate your shoulders. I wanted as much elevation as possible so I stuffed boos/pillows in a wing-back chair on either side of me for me (to elevate my hands another 4” off the base of the chair) and braced myself on those.
With elbows locked it took 15 minutes of agony before the ureter ‘unkinked’ and the relief from pain was so shocking I almost blacked out (feel forward) so make sure someone is near until that happens or you could end up with a skull fracture.
In that position I napped. I could feel the stones tumble through the ureter, giving me quick little pokes that were NOTHING in comparison to the kinked ureter pain. I did drink alot of water and I think it took about 3 hours of this before I felt I could move about normally. However, going to the rest room (all that water) meant my shoulders were not elevated and the ureter quickly kinked again, agony returned and didn’t leave until I again sat in a chair with my elbows locked, shoulders elevated for 15 minutes.

LOL. Although to be fair, I have to say I’ve learned a lot on this forum. Kidney stones seem to be in the get-to-the-ER category, though.
Depends on the stone. If it’s a calcium based stone, yeah. If it’s an acid based stone not so much
Urologists have a method to deal with it.
Don’t drink diet soda. Drink lots of water.
I agree, hubby has a habit of kidney stones. He’s got a few in there waiting to come out but he’s had a heart attack, a stroke, Covid, pneumonia, and now colon cancer. He’s had half his colon removed and we are now doing chemo. His body forgot about they kidney stones maybe.
Ultrasonic lithotripsy often doesn't always work and can damage your kidneys. When it didn't work for me after two tries, another urologist stepped in, said it could be potentially damaging and took different path.
The procedure that worked for me several times was ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy where a laser is used to blast the stone into pieces that will pass. The downside to that is that it feels like your pissing glass for several days due to the irritation of scope going up and back out your johnson.
I use two tylenol and one Motrin together to deal with severe pain. I make myself take it only twice a day since tylenol can harm the liver in high dosings. The cranberry juice takes about a day to give relief but it does work.
I take it in pill form, it still tastes terrible, but not as bad as in liquid form.
I pill form one can quickly swallow with little REMAINING taste.
THE ACV helps break up the kidney stones and reduce new ones from developing.
You should be drinking several beers a day.
It’s hard to trust the medical profession now. I work in a hospital- I get it. But realize this- getting mixed and often conflicting suggestions and advice from friends may cause more troubles. Kidney stones can pass on their own, or can cause blockage and serious problems. They can take hours or days to pass- depending. A blood test can check your renal function and help determine best treatment.
I’d avoid ibuprofen etc. They often don’t dance well with kidneys. The thing with kidney stones is location- and without a CT or ultrasound you won’t know.
I respect your reticence in going to a doc- but this can go south quickly, or resolve itself. But- you don’t know.
P.S. After this, if you drink soda, cut it in half, then 1/4, and just drink water. You don’t have to like it, lol, just drink it, plenty of it.

Am sorry but cannot remember the name of the Rx that expands/dilates the tubes. Get your doc to help. A pill or two a day and small rocks will pass.
As in general, it depends totally on size. I’ve had several, multiple occasions.
Forget OTCounter pain killers. Might as well do booze shots. Get oxycontin or equivalent. If you doc won’t, get another doc. Vicondin never worked on me.
Once an Xray showed a single rock ~6mm in size. My urologist basically said: “No Fing way that can pass, we need to get you now into the hospital so we can use ultrasound.”
Think on how they look under a magnifying glass — roundish rocks rolled in ground glass. Passing one will be bloody and excruciating.
You must catch a rock once passed, a urologist get you a fine filter to pee into. Send that to a lab so you can find out what kind. Some are really nasty. Others are kinda benign. Mine are the latter and I daily take a pill to increase urination (same as taken to lower BP) and potassium caltrate to change urine chemistry. I still have them, but much smaller and they pass without pain. Even caught one on an Xray on its way to the bladder.
Advil liqui-gels work for me.
From one who’s had ‘em, the bad news is some are too large to pass, and the longer you wait, the greater the risk of kidney damage...Some are just too large to make it thru the urethra...
Best advice is seek a urologist...I had a 17mm stone, and due to position was not a candidate for lithotripsy...Stone needed to be broken up with a laser and the debris vacuumed out...All done thru a transurethral catheter under general anesthesia...
Good news is it’s painless and recovery is “right now”...Pain relief is “Ahhh”!
Was in your situation about 2 years ago - woke up in middle of night with severe pain. Had kidney stone before so figured it would pass During day pain got worse so went to ER that night Took X rays and found had stone lodged in left urinary duct, which was causing the pain. Found larger stone in right stone which was not doing anything. Scheduled for surgery Problem was that all Operating rooms tied up . Kept postponing surgery all day Pain got so bad had to be given Dilaudid Since was scheduled for surgery could not eat anything Finally got OR free about midnight Doctor slid cather up where sun dont shine and used laser to break up stone so could pass Lucky was out for this part
Problem is let it go can cause severe kidney damage as well as being in severe pain
GO to Emergency room and get it checked now !!
