PETA is calling for the University of Georgia to be “a winner not only in football but also in its treatment of” animals.
In the wake of its second straight National Championship, the animal rights organization wants the school to immediately halt its use of its live mascot, an English bulldog named Uga.
The group claims that the school’s use of Uga “drives demand for breathing-impaired breeds (BIBs),” like pugs, boxers, and English and French bulldogs.
“As the back-to-back national champion, can’t UGA find it in its heart to honestly examine the impact of its promotion of deformed dogs and call time on its outdated, live-animal mascot program?” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital. “PETA is calling on (University of Georgia president) Jere Morehead to be a peach and replace poor Uga with a human mascot who can support the team in a winning way.”

This particular line of dogs (they are all related) has developed (or devolved) into a very extreme bulldog type. The very brachycephalic ("smushed") face means that they do have breathing problems, which leads to lung and heart problems as well. If you look on the website, you can see that after the first few Ugas who had fairly normal lifespan, they began to die at younger and younger ages, a couple at only 2-3 years.
Uga X is 7, and he couldn't go to this game because he could not tolerate the drive or the plane ride - which means he is probably on his last legs. That's too bad.
I would never breathe a word to the sickos at PETA, but I would love to see the folks who breed the UGA dogs outcross to a less extreme American Bulldog.
We have the same problem with Labrador Retrievers. The show people go for more and more extreme type, until now the Specialty Labs are beer barrels on casters, with massive bodies and heads and little teeny legs. They could not retrieve a duck if their life depended on it.
They forgot to say it causes globull warming.
Of course the problem isn’t Georgia using the dog. The problem is an AKC that keeps pushing purebreds as the way, causing lots of inbreeding, and simply destroying the breeds. We the people need to break the purebred industry.
I don’t know about the new Uga but the old Uga lived with Ed Garland the number one defense attorney in Georgia. I’m sure he had a great life.
The dog has an air conditioned house near the cheerleaders. Not a bad life.

Be fun to see PETA take on the Marines.
Yes, and PETA is right on the case!! PETA urges Mississippi State to retire mascot.
Yale also has a bulldog mascot "Handsome Dan", made famous by Cole Porter: Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Bow Wow Wow!
Still waiting for peta to denounce Minnesota legalizing animal sacrifice…
Well, he’s a know-it-all, and it’s always fun to mess with him.
> But PETA has no problem using a deformed dog like Tracy Reiman! <
She is fair game now. She opened the door to judging by looks.

“Breathing impaired” dogs seem to live as long as most other dogs, and adjust to,their lives of not breathing 100%. How impaired are they Peta? 3%? The Importsnt thing is their oxygen levels- If they are normal, then what is the issue?
Peta- Take yer demand and go pound sand.
Stay out of it. PETA.
Your “services” are not required.
“UGA. The dog’s name is Uga. Pronounced “Ugg-ah”. You as a Gator should know that.”
Trolls don’t bother with reading comprehension
PETA ought to be mad at the abuse Georgia did to horned frogs that night. LOL
I wish Florida would bring back their live Gator mascot.
What are the actual stats on life expectancy? Also, what are the oxygen readings at rest and at play? Those are the two important measurements. I don’t know about the extreme breeding, but surely there must be stats for average bu,.dog lifespan?
