Summary: A new study based on 297 ancient Scandinavian genomes analysed together with the genomic data of 16,638 present day Scandinavians resolve the complex relations between geography, ancestry, and gene flow in Scandinavia — encompassing the Roman Age, the Viking Age and later periods. A surprising increase of variation during the Viking period indicates that gene flow into Scandinavia was especially intense during this period.

An international study coordinated from Stockholm and Reykjavik investigates the development of the Scandinavian gene pool over the latest 2000 years. In this effort the scientists relied on historic and prehistoric genomes, and from material excavated in Scandinavia. These ancient genomes were compared with genomic data from 16,638 contemporary Scandinavians. As the geographical origin and the datings were known for all these individuals, it was possible to resolve the development of the gene pool to a level never realised previously...
Another new discovery in this study was what happened to the gene pool after the Viking period. The scientists were surprised to find that it bounced back in the direction of what it looked like before the Viking period migration.

The odd twist to the story, said researcher James Barrett, is that it was the selective killing of female newborns that led to a shortage of Scandinavian women in the first place, resulting later in intense competition over eligible women.
Could be the women refused to be brood mares for their owners and had “post natal abortions” and/or killed or were killed because of this.
Madness! Slavery was invented by Americans in 1619 because they hated black people!
Heh. One of the Norse sagas supposedly mentions it was a German slave that found the wild grapes that gave Vinland its name.
A perpetuated Vikinophobic lie, based on a mistranslation: the original word wasn't 'slave', but 'immigrant'.
"East Europeans have small teeth compared with the relatively large teeth of the Scandinavian, a peculiarity deriving from an age-old genetic distinction. Ancient skulls tell us that the early settlers of east Europe were mostly descendants of an ancient east European population which lived in prolonged isolation from the Scandinavians. Perhaps the "Siberian" element in Finnish genes is, in fact, east European in origin?"
They killed the men, stole the women and children. Naughty Vikings. I bet the victims were mostly Irish. (As are the majority of locals who claim to be native Australians.)
Irish is like chicken manure. A little goes a very long way.
Must have from all the raiding the vikings did
Just another successful booty call for Sven and Yodin!
That and Cherokee.
I swear, in the 1800s there must have only been a few thousand Indians from all the different tribes all over the USA, but at least 100 million Cherokee, given all their self-claimed descendants today.
The strongest survived and the weakest parishes. Reinforcing the Viking DNA and the genetic strength to the climate, region (think less sunlight) and the ability to adapt. The mental and disease resistance reinforcement was also critical.
My brother did the ancestry test. It came back as 15% Scandinavian. We were talking about it and I scoffed since most of our ancestors were from the British isles. Then it dawned on me........

Yeah, just like immigration from Africa was exceptional during the colonial period...................
Late era Vikings settled in what is now the UK.............
Exactly. There was a big chunk of England called the “Danelaw” because that’s where the Vikings settled.
Then the Normans came. Norman = North Man....ie Viking. The Vikings were given Normandy by the French king and they settled that area heavily.
So England got a 2nd big infusion of Viking blood even after the first.
Involuntary immigration
