I live in an early-60's-build house. For the most part, it's wonderful, but it has very little insulation. I've been meaning to rectify that, but didn't yet.
So, after spending a warm night buried under blankets, I wake up to a shivering-cold set of rooms, all under 60 degrees F.... even though me and the missus set all the baseboard heating to max and left both space heaters going.
So, I decide to go to Walmart. I find two pallets of space heaters, one of them Infra-red, and one of them Oil-radiant. Both are electric.
I go ahead and put one of each in my cart, get a few food items, then decide to pick up one more Infra-red heater.... maybe 5 minutes later.
BOTH PALLETS ARE CLEANED OUT... when I get to the register, everyone had a pair of those heaters in their cart.
The locks open....the handles won’t budge to open the doors.
I just read on line to use a d-icer like one usd on windshield.....or make one of alcohol and water. I have both so I’ll try those.
Wind could be a factor...
No its only a few years old I got it replaced when the original died one winter ...
Grew up in the Twin Cities area, and we had no garage, so on the coldest night’s my father would put a pan of hot charcoal briquettes under the front of our car.
Will never forget the night when my Mom looked out our frost-covered window and asked my Dad:
“What’s that red glow out on the driveway?”
Took a few months and the purchase of another vehicle, but asking “what’s that red glow” would always elicit a round of hearty chuckles!
The “South” is colder than a witch’s back pocket.
Just NE of Little Rock, we’ve had -19ยฐ windchill and a 2ยฐF actual temperature. This morning it was -17ยฐ. Right now, in the sun, it’s a toasty 26ยฐ.
I’m sorry, but I’ve had my fill of “The South.” Back home out West, farther north than we are, they had a daytime temp of 40ยฐF.

I used to live in Davenport, Ia, in the early ‘60s. One particularly cold Feb. it was -17ยฐF. I was 14 and used to sleep with the bedroom widow cracked, in the buff, under two OD WWII army blankets. I loved it. My Mom would get exasperated with me because it would icd the windows up from the inside. In the meantime her ‘55 Buick Century was frozen to the driveway. Srep outside ghe house and walk 20’ to the sidewalk and my hair would be frozen. Ten to 15 minutes without ear protection was inviting frostbite. We used to go iceskating every night but we knew how to dress for it. We thrived.
Outside Baltimore. Power out since yesterday at 4:10pm. It was ok for an evening/night. Got down to 3 with wind chill of -14. House has held at 46โฆbut weโre losing our sense of humor. Eagles play Cowboys at 4:30 so weโre off to a bar soon.
Last month I paid $2.99 to top off my 500 gln propane, Alabama. What are you paying in VA?
It is darned cold for Georgia. 12 (not including wind China lol factor)

No great story. Just glad I have a place to stay hat is warm
-37 in Libby, MT Thursday morning. No wind. Got 12โ of snow the day before. Today its +15 forecast to reach 30. Time to plow.
Duke energy is doing the same here in upstate SC. Love our Mr Heater.

You are right! Our house is over 4000 sq. ft. and the house is mid century modern with mostly windows.
Got down to 10 degrees night before last here in the W. Texas desert. I spent most of the night re-warming the outside cats' water that kept icing up. They are fine, by the way. I have purchased self-heating pads for them, which they love. They are semi-ferals, so won't come indoors. I want one of those pads for myself. Why don't they sell them for hoomans? My kitties wish you a VERY Merry Christmas! BOOP! |
Do you have a cast iron teapot on it, to add moisture?
Always heard that was the crucial ingredient to perfect wood stove heating ๐
Visited Taormina some years back, and had grilled shrimp that completely ruined me until I can get back to have it again. That is Saying a lot for someone who lives on the Georgia/Florida coast ๐ถ

The snow is filtering in through the front door and front window. I have snow resting on my blinds. That wind from the west is a straight shot to our house with no obstructions for at least 2 miles to even slow it down. We are boiling water to add a bit of humidity to the air.

You really gotta work hard to find that much isolation in southern Indiana.

There were chamber pots under each bed so you didn’t have to make midnight trips to the outhouse.
She had a large aluminum tub for baths. Water heated on the coal stove.
Heaters? Do not own one or does my house have heating.
