I live in an early-60's-build house. For the most part, it's wonderful, but it has very little insulation. I've been meaning to rectify that, but didn't yet.
So, after spending a warm night buried under blankets, I wake up to a shivering-cold set of rooms, all under 60 degrees F.... even though me and the missus set all the baseboard heating to max and left both space heaters going.
So, I decide to go to Walmart. I find two pallets of space heaters, one of them Infra-red, and one of them Oil-radiant. Both are electric.
I go ahead and put one of each in my cart, get a few food items, then decide to pick up one more Infra-red heater.... maybe 5 minutes later.
BOTH PALLETS ARE CLEANED OUT... when I get to the register, everyone had a pair of those heaters in their cart.
Years ago living in the north woods of Minnesota - we used an extension cord and put a light under the truck hood. Of course with today’s LED bulbs it might not work...
Have had a Generac generator for YEARS! (10 at least).
It is fueled by propane. Best purchase I ever made!
Our heat is also propane.
Small Ranch, 2x6 construction, excessive insulation, thermopane windows, most are low E, storm doors.
Insulation pays for itself. Fiberglas batts are the ONLY way to go. Blown in is a MESS. If, wait, WHEN you have any repairs, construction, remodeling, your blown in insulation BLOWS OUT! It also compacts over time.
Foam is a mess. It shrinks. How will it hold up over time?
How about that injected in formaldehyde foam? Wasn’t that a great idea? (just like the jabs) NOT!
Amazing Ukraine is not even a NATO member but we are spending more on defending it that sustaining NATO, and running the risk of a nuclear war. Several NATO nations have almost exhausted their military supplies and would be unable to defend themselves in a military exchange.
I watch a lot of British TV shows. Most homes there have an Aga Stove, and use them to heat the house. I'd never heard of them until I watched those shows. I just did a search, and Aga stoves are available in the U.S. I'm sure they cost an arm, and a leg, and don't know much about them. I guess cooking with them can be a bit challenging at first.

It will be a two-stage System. Thermostat will go into Heat1 at a few degrees below the goal. Heat2 is when you are like 5 degrees below. All it means is a stage two wired device kicks in. Your hvac may not even have that device. Usually Heat1 is heat pump, Heat2 is the electric heat coils. Heat1 draws maybe 3 or 4 kilowatts, Heat2 as much as 8 kw.
Just because thermostat display says something, does not mean the hardware exists. If system is older, thermostat may have been replaced since installation.
Emerg really means both stages are in play and nothing more.
13 degrees this morning in Raleigh, NC. This is the south. Itโs not supposed to get this cold. The funny party, is theyโre saying New Years Eve will be in the 60s.
Been there, done that, too. Back in the 50's. Visiting our farmer relatives in Tenn and Nebr.
Why so low? That's way too cold for me!
I use a heating pad to warm up the couch and me...got a big one. My feet...got those slipper socks from Dicks...they’re on sale...they’re great...something makes them warmer than my other pairs.
We are forted up until the thaw.

Last night here in Annapolis, Maryland, the temperature dropped to 7 degrees Fahrenheit. The wind was blowing 30-40 mph. At about 7:00 PM the power went out. The dog and I buried ourselves under the covers and still shivered. Fortunately, at about 1:00 AM power was restored but “cold soak” had dragged the house temperature down to 52 degrees. The house is warming but slowly. As I write this it is back up to 68 degrees. Going down to 8 Degrees tonight.
I miss the wood stove we had in our former house......nothing beats the heat they put out.
The hardware store will have some great spray de-icer.
Just hop in your car and....oh.

Back in the 60's we used electric heated oil dipsticks at night.
They also have battery tray warmers and wraps.
Our Aux heat is gas so really warm. We put last night’s leftovers in the garage. 8 degrees and my daughter’s BF just took the dogs out for a walk. Lucky him.
The warmest hat I have is a Santa hat so I will be wearing that to the Walmarts. I need kitty litter, a box of wine, a bottle of stool softeners and some Scratchers. Won’t the kids be surprised when they look under the tree tomorrow?
Power went out twice this morning. Me and the three furbabies just went back to bed and waited.
