Starbucks has rolled out a new tipping system and customers are freaking out

Tipping at restaurants and coffee shops can be tricky business. Technically, it isn’t mandatory, but it’s increasingly looked down upon if you skip it altogether. That’s exactly the pickle customers are finding themselves in with the new tipping system at Starbucks.

The world-famous coffee chain announced the initiative in May as a way for customers to “recognize their favorite baristas.” They began rolling it out in some stores in September, where customers paying with debit or credit cards can give the barista a $1, $2 or custom tip—prompting some strong feelings in the process.

A Reddit thread about the tipping system has racked up more than 100 comments.

“It works so well for in-store purchases but yeah having it in drive thru is so awkward I never know what to say,” one user wrote

One Twitter user wrote: “I went through the Starbucks Drive through and got one drink and they now start asking if you want to tip as soon as you pull your card out to pay while looking at you It’s so awkward…… just pay these people a better wage.”

Starting August 1, Starbucks increased the average pay for employees to nearly $17/hour in the U.S. Those hired before May 2 would receive either a 3% wage increase or $15/hour, whichever is higher, a spokesperson at Starbucks said.

Another Twitter user wrote: “I’m really not trying to be rude bc I know customer service jobs are hard work but now they want tips at the drive-thru at my Starbucks when you pay with a card… you’re literally just handing it to me.”

One Facebook user wrote: “People WILL call me cheap, but I rarely tip on to-go orders or grabbing a coffee…I do tip very well when I go to dinner, or use various services.

I would stay my ass out of there then. Unless I liked coffee other people spit in.

I stopped going to Starbucks a long time ago—after they publicly announced they would prioritize the hiring of migrants over native Americans. That didn’t sit well with me.

I found a much better solution—I make my coffee at home—at a fraction of the cost of Starbucks. I can drink it at home or take it with me in a thermal cup.

Why are people relying on the food service industry to feed them? When I was going to college I worked in a restaurant kitchen and I saw things (use of spoiled foods, spitting in customer foods, etc.) that led me to avoid restaurants altogether.

No one tips the McDonald's workers.

And their coffee is better than Starbucks. 😏

NEVER had a coffee from Starbucks, so this will NEVER be an issue for us. Wife LOVES her coffee (beans from a roaster in the Blue Ridge mountains)...she is looking to give the ‘Bulletproof’ recipe a try in the near future.

Us real coffee connoisseurs prefer AM/PM, and 7-11 if it’s not available

I’ll have McDonald’s coffee on road trips. I don’t think we have AM/PM here but there are a couple of 7/11s. I’ll have to try it if I’m ever near one and need a caffeine lift.

I go to a couple of indy coffee shops near me that are good, but mostly, I just make my coffee at home.

I don’t ever tip at a fast food joint. I also never go to Starbuck’s. I hate their coffee and their pretentious names and sizes.

I travel a lot for work. When I’m locally on the road, my first stop has usually been WAWA (a gas station chain that prints coffee money every morning)

They’ve raised their prices 4-5 times in the last two years. (I fully understand why)

I’ve begun making my own coffee in the mornings to save some cash.

It is not a tip making job, that’s what everyone is freaking out about.

Okay. I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of a Starbucks. Wasn't sure what the normal protocol was.

The pool tipping idea is bogus and horribly misguided.

Yes, because it rewards the slackers like Ocasio-Cortez along with the hard workers.

I always laugh when pro football players cheer each other just for doing their job. My husband is a mechanic and I try picturing him high fiving the crew when he finishes a job well done, also makes me laugh. Rarely does he get a tip and that’s ok, he makes a good wage. Everybody wants accolades just for showing these days.

I don’t tip at the large chains. I sometimes tip at our local mom and pops, especially when the remember me and ask about me.

My sister usually sends me a $25 Starbucks card for my birthday. I return the favor on her birthday. I have 10 to 15 years worth of cards on my shelf. I haven't set foot in a Starbuck's for the last 8 years. The longer I wait, the less I want to ever set foot in there again.

Given that it’s a left-wing company that sells nasty coffee I figured they’d just add on the “tip” without even asking the customer.

Lol. My wife found out years ago that Scambucks gives her a headache. And she loves coffee. McD is her usual when out of the house.

I found as a teen that I like the smell of coffee at times, but decided it tastes like dirt. I also hate to burn my tongue or abuse my teeth. I’m a rarity: a guy that drove truck OTR... without coffee (and with the exception of rare ice tea, never any other caffiene; and no pills).

I don’t like a hand tied up holding a drink either. You never know when you might need that hand.
