Jay Leno suffered "serious burns" in a gasoline fire on Nov. 12, but looked happy and healthy in a photo shared Monday after he was discharged from the Grossman Burn Center

Jay Leno is headed home.

The former Tonight Show host, 72, was discharged from Grossman Burn Center in the Los Angeles area on Monday, nine days after he suffered "serious burns" in a garage gasoline fire. Center staff shared an image of the smiling comedian alongside several of his caretakers.

"Comedian Jay Leno was released from the Grossman Burn Center today," doctors shared in a release obtained by PEOPLE on Monday. "After a 10-day stay at the facility, Jay will receive follow-up care at the Grossman Outpatient Burn Clinic for burns to his face, chest and hands he received during a fire at his home garage. Jay would like to let everyone know how thankful he is for the care he received, and is very appreciative of all of the well wishes. He is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family and friends and wishes everyone a wonderful holiday."

Within the statement, his physician Dr. Peter Grossman added, "I am pleased with Jay's progress, and I am optimistic that he will make a full recovery."

Leno underwent treatment involving surgical excision and grafting procedure, which removes unhealthy tissue in an effort to promote wound healing and reduce the risk of infection. Grossman said that with Leno's burns, "much of the thickness of the skin was injured" in some areas, so unhealthy tissue was being removed.

Set my pants on fire Fat Tuesday morning in NOLA. Backed up too close to a heater. Getting to ER on Fat Tuesday was a challenge. Had to have grafts on back of thighs. Not fun! My ahole buddies called me Sparky for a while. No alcohol involved believe it or not...too early in the day.

Worked Mickey D’s in 1975 (paper hat and barber shirt days) and hit my forearm on a fry basket that had just been pulled from the vat. Had the grid pattern “branded” on me for a couple weeks.

The beef tallow and lard fries were the best. About the only thing I would want to eat after a shift at that station.

Did you have dirty tricks to play on a-hole customers? Ours were not breaking the yolk on the egg Mac Muffin (shirt killer) and cooking an apple pie in the filet-o-fish vat.

I can’t see any burn scars or marks. Must have been 1st and 2nd degree.

I get gut feelings about people, and he just doesn’t trigger any of the trip wires I get from most Hollywood types.

By the way, my best wishes to you and yours for a Happy Thanksgiving, FRiend...:)

There was a statement from a related article saying it was a steam engine.

YVW.

I watched the video again and the gasoline fuel tank is pressurized to about 65-70 psi. (Yikes!)

At that pressure any leak would be instantly vaporized and would probably turn into a pretty good size fireball should there be a spark.

I hope his medical team gets some real nice Christmas presents!

DailyMail ran an article yesterday or the day before, showing him loaded down with bags and boxes said to be cookies, taking them to the hospital.

In all his years of working on cars (he did the dealer prep on Letterman’s car, ages ago) it’s impressive he’d never had serious accident before this.
