A 16-year-old girl was in serious condition after being mauled by six of her family’s large dogs at their home in Southern California over the weekend, authorities said.
A neighbor called 911 to report the attack around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Thousand Oaks, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Sheriff’s Capt. Ron Chips said the teen suffered “several significant lacerations and dog bites to her head, torso, and arms.” The girl’s mother was also bit, but not seriously injured, he said.
The dogs were identified as cane corsos, a type of mastiff, the Ventura County Star reported Monday.
When firefighters arrived at the home, they attempted to stop the attack by blasting their truck sirens and waving their tools, officials said.

Guess they don’t carry fire axes, sledgehammers, hooligan door opening tools, pry bars, CO2 extinguishers, fire hydrant wrenches or other heavy stuff !!

The “waving their tools” thing made me bust out laughing. I won’t say why.
We had neighbors who had a female mastiff, not even fully grown, she weighed 165 pounds.
I saw one of the owners in the supermarket and she was pushing two carts, one for them, and one for the dog.
The dog was gentle, but I got very nervous when she wanted to play with our four year old.
His entire arm disappeared into her mouth for a second, but he was just fine, only got slimed.

Why do you choose to have this kind of dog as opposed to another, less dangerous, breed? Are there specific advantages to having a cane corso as a pet, compared to a lab-and-something?
No such thing as well-trained pit
I’ve raised one male Cane Corso, and he was always a joy to have around - well socialized, well trained, and very trustworthy, with other people and with other dogs. He used to run the courses in dog agility fun meets, which was a sight to see. He never won, but he would always draw a crowd.
Then I raised a female Cane Corso. I tried to treat her, and train her, and socialize her in the same way as I did with the male, but the female was always just “off”. She was was never really comfortable with people outside the immediate family. She loved the big male Cane Corso for the few years I had them at the same time, but she barely tolerated other dogs. I was sad when she finally died, but I don’t know that I’ll get another Cane Corso, since I don’t know what I did wrong with her.
He’s not dangerous when properly trained and handled. I like large dogs. I want a protective dog. He is extremely loyal and intelligent. He is socialized to my neighbors, friends and family. He’s just big. So that has to be considered when handling him. While he is big, he’s still a puppy. So imagine a nearly full grown lab that acts like a puppy … teething, tasting, exploring. That not very compatible with young children like my grandson, who my dog outweighs. Thus, I kennel him when my grandson around. Like I said before, he will mellow out as he gets older.

We met a Cane Corso puppy one day, just a little 30lb thing. Lots of ego, lots of personality. He took to my Greyhound and it was an instant friendship. Very friendly and loving and we shared our ice cream and ice water with him. We met the dog again a year later and he was four times larger, so happy to see us again, huge personality. The owner was astonished at his dog’s excitement and happiness. But you could see the dog was very alert, at one point fixating on a weird homeless guy (shouting at himself) across the street when my dog grew concerned. Each dog then tried to guard the other from the threat but the Cane Corso won the contest easily.
The owner had a very commanding presence with his dog, hilariously my dog followed his commands too. That essential awareness and presence seems very necessary with such a powerfully opinionated dog.
Nah. Mastiffs.
I was walking through an area of local woods that’s frequented by homeless. There was a family of five...three young children....walking through, and a skinny 100-or-so pound dog that barked and charged at me. The husband apologized for scaring me. I told him that mastiffs generally didn’t worry me, as they aren’t really known to be biters. The little four-year old girl looked at me and said “He’s not a mastiff. He’s half Cane Corso and half Presa Canario.” OK, then.
They can be very sensitive. If I look at my pup in a cross manner it’s almost like he’s going cry. I am very careful to keep my temper in check when he’s bad. He just doesn’t know he’s bad yet. I train him with mostly all positive reinforcement, but sometimes he knows when I am not happy with him. He will sulk for a few minutes and then tries to make up with me.
Please be careful, my 9 yo niece had the family pet corso take a nip at her face for no reason, she is OK. This dog sleeps with the other niece in her bed every night. Last week, the dog looked like it wanted some attention from dad and then took a nip from his throat. The dog is now gone, yes, there are two other dogs in the family and everything always seemed fine, they are on a ranch, not cooped up.

When I lived in San Francisco decades ago, a woman was killed by one or two Presa Canario dogs. Owner went to jail. It happened in a beautiful apartment building.
My big male Cane Corso weughs 220 pounds. His tail wags like a cocker spaniel on speed. He gives the best big kisses.
