Brookings scholar Richard Reeves and his just-released book, Of Boys and Men, proceeds from the proposition that “men at the top are still flourishing, but men in general are not.” Men are struggling in school, in the job market, and in family life; they are the gender most likely to end up in prison and most vulnerable to “deaths of despair.”
Times columnist Michelle Goldberg argues that the solutions proposed by the book do too little to address “political and economic decisions that have made American life brutal.

What's ironic is that the author probably doesn't see the parallels to the race-card industry fueling grievances and creating anger and discontent. I'm sure she'd say, "Oh, that's different."
In the earlier centuries of our country, young men had a path to "prove themselves", the step guys took to verify to themselves and those around him that they had made the jump from mama to the hard realities of manhood.
For some, it was leaving home for finding their fortunes west. For others, it was joining military service and serving during wartime (we had enough wars back then, that most every guy had that chance). Or they went directly to a hard-guy job and proved themselves by working in mining or working in a steel mill and making it.
Since about 60-70 years ago, most young men avoided military service and the west was long won and the tough guy jobs became much scarcer.
Today's men are growing up in an environment of softness, safety, and inescapable "equality" where almost nothing exists that some young lady isn't also qualified to do and he never gets to "prove" himself.
That's where all these guys, whiling away their lives in mama's basement, playing video games and watching porn came from.
Where this — I’ll call it feminism-run-amok — breaks down is at the borders of the Western World. You can bet this anti-male way of thinking does not prevail in Asia or the Islamic World and those populations are on the move and coming to a neighborhood near you.

Could it be that men see that there is a poor ROI on many degrees other than STEM. If one cannot see their way to a STEM occupation, why go to college? Plumbers make more money than a specialist who holds a degree in Eastern African Mating Rituals.
If you don’t want to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, there’s not much reason for college.
I highly recommend trades to young men.

Always accuse your enemy of doing what you in fact, do. They always assign political gain to anything that Conservatives want/do. And their sheeple believe it as it is promoted as fact by the Media.
So what are men waiting for? This couldn't happen without the cooperation (or capitulation) of men.
Men could have put an end to this before it started, but in too many cases men choose to try to score points with whomever they want to stick it into instead. Being blinded by their own lust, they are completely oblivious to the fact that they have created the system that is biased against them.
Whose choice was that?

My take on that is to ask the question: when do boys know they are men? Girls know they are women when they have their time of the month and other women come to them teaching them about their life to come: mothers, wives, culture makers.
Men? At what point? Once and for eons boys would be sent off into the wild - if they came back, they were men. They became warriors and hunters (and later farmers) that fed and protected the tribe. They participated in shows of force against enemies - death was rare.
Later, when men became “less” valuable, the boys were sent off to war - many died, but those that returned were men. Other men came to them and taufht them about their life to come : warriors, hunters, fathers.
Now boys can join the military if they are fit enough, if they meet other qualifications. But most don’t see any point as there are too many other things they can do. Unfortunately, there are few other trials that equal the survivability challenge - only fishing crab in the Bering Sea comes to mind.
No one teaches boys anything about their lives to come. As a result many males remain boys for most of their life, lost in drugs, criminality, identity issues, and other anti-social pursuits. Each time a boy fails to know he is a man, society becomes weaker, the culture begins to rot. As the weakness and rot progress, the entire society begins to collapse and eventually disintegrates.
We now are on in that later process.

Not really because you crossed out the point, changing the sentence to something not meant. Its not about serving in the military, its about how does a boy know he is a man.
What BS. The party line is all of a sudden young men are too fat, dumb and lazy to serve in the military. CYA poppy cock. The real reason is that the DOD WENT WOKE and no normal person wants to enlist for that sh!tshow.
High above unmarried men past their prime on the misery index are men who have been raped in divorce court with little to no access to their kids.
Young men who grew up in those situations are unwilling to continue the cycle. The government has no business in marriages and Family Law is a government scam.
The West has been infected with the isms of people from matriarchal cultures for the last century and a half - allowable because of the luxuries of the Unbound Prometheus. The powers to be are angry and afraid as men unplug, like Atlas Shrugging.

The Atlantic - as usual - gets it wrong. The solutions are in the past. Not yesterday’s technology but doing things like restoring manufacturing jobs - which always employed significantly more men. That would also enhance national security.
Also, rolling back a lot of the anti-male changes that were made at the behest of Feminazis is necessary. Get rid of Title IX kangaroo “courts” on college campuses. Get rid of speech codes. Restore PE in primary and secondary education. Boys are more energetic and restless - nature did not design boys to sit in a classroom with no physical activity all day. They do not learn as well under such circumstances.
More male teachers would be a good idea and that needs to be encouraged.
Masculinity is not merely some cultural phenomenon. Nor is it something to be derided. It is the natural way of being for males. There’s a reason you find it all over the world and why the Western world was that way until the last generation when social engineers thought they could do better by teaching boys to be beta cuck simps.
The irony is that despite what the feminazis claim, not one iota of this is anti female - exactly the reverse is true. Women do not want Mr Sensitive Ponytail. No matter what they say, the choices women actually make indicate over and over and over again that they MUCH prefer real men. Women consistently reported being happier 50-60 years ago than they are now.
If we’ve really made all this supposed “progress” how come males are doing so badly and women are much more unhappy than they used to be? Everybody used to be happier than they are now.
