Even after the official declaration of war, BBH sent money to Hitler. Upon being apprised of the situation, FDR called J. Edgar Hoover into his office and got John Foster Dulles on the phone. "Foster, if you don't stop sending money to Hitler, I'm going to send Edgar up there to New York to slap the cuffs on the whole lot of you. Don't you know there's a war on? Oh, and give Lucille my best."
Hoover, who was an excellent mimic, got years of mileage out of imitating FDR at those New York dinner parties that he and Clyde Tolson attended during the war years.
