As a potent Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida, the top executive at Florida Power & Light warned residents in the storm’s path to expect “life-changing effects” from widespread and catastrophic damage to the state’s electrical grid that will take days, and in some cases weeks, to fully fix.
Speaking on a livestream from FPL’s Palm Beach County emergency command center, President and CEO Eric Silagy said the company expects it will have to completely rebuild sections of its electrical system given Ian’s massive size and powerful winds, as well as the extensive rainfall and flooding it’s forecast to generate.
Silagy said that damage will not be limited to the coastal area taking a direct hit from Ian’s eyewall on Wednesday afternoon, but will be seen along its full path as the storm thrashes its way across the state to the Atlantic Ocean, where it’s expected to emerge Thursday.
“There are sections of our territory we will not be able to repair, we will have to rebuild,” Silagy said. “I can’t stress the difference that makes. Rebuilding can take many days or weeks.” Get unlimited digital access Subscribe now for just $2 for 2 months.
Only a couple of hours after Silagy spoke, the number of utility customers in Florida without power soared well past 1 million, and state officials said they expect those numbers to grow exponentially as the storm makes its way across the state. Around midnight, the number of Florida users without electricity stood at about 2.1 million, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that compiles outage numbers.

DeSantis’ FAULT!!!!!
Florida scores huge carbon reduction!
Details at 11....
DeSantis said Charlotte and Lee county power grids are almost going to have to be completely rebuilt.
The Democrats here in the Northeast know how to deal with massive power outages caused by hurricanes:
Blame the power companies!
;-)
Maybe it will scare liberals from moving there?
There’s that pesky CO2 at work again! It’s a bad, jumping, gas, gas, gas.
Thank God DeSantis evacuated those Illegals in time.
Literally saving lives, he's a saint.
Loss of power is a given when hit by a hurricane or tropical storm.
Many years ago a hurricane hit Western Ma. I was the GM of a large CATV system. We got shredded that day. Miles of plant were on the ground and it would take a lot of work to get it back on the poles.
We started getting calls about 1 PM from people who were absolutely livid that we would not have things put back together for Monday Night Football, which was starting in 8 hours.
People have warped expectations of how companies recover from these types of disasters.
“Loss of power is a given when hit by a hurricane or tropical storm”
Not 50 days before an election........”never let a crisis go to waste”
On another related matter has anyone heard anything about people evacuating in their battery electric cars? How far did they get? Were they able to recharge, etc,?
Pats fans are a bit OCD....................
“Florida scores huge carbon reduction!

That headline is reserved for dem governors only.
👍😉....................................
That’s the MSMs fault.
Me. Since last night. We’re in Palm Bay on the east coast. The wind was 0 this morning but has kicked back up to 25 mph so they won’t even try to assess what went wrong until much later or tomorrow. My son is 15 miles North and has power.
