EV runs out of juice, pushed by coal miners

DC tourist ran out of battery in the middle of a remote West Virginia road on Friday, near a coal mine on Mettiki Coal access road U.S. 48, a few miles outside of Davis, according to WTRF.

From FaceBook:

Randy Smith on Friday Some days are just better than others. Today at our mine off Corridor H an electric car from DC ran out of battery at the road entrance to the mine. Someone called one of our foreman and told him a car was broke down in the middle of our haul road. He went to investigate and found out they had indeed ran out of juice coming from DC to Davis for a get away weekend. He then went back to the mine and got guys to push the car to the guard shack so they could plug in to charge. ... See more

I am home. Thanks for asking.
I pulled in Monday morning around 2am Pacific.

It was a long trip but very well worth it.

The flight out was interesting; I saw the sun come up from 33,000 feet over the Great Salt Lake. I enjoyed an excellent bowl of chili and a warm visit with TC and family that evening. We’ve been conversing online so long it felt much more like going over to visit a neighbor than anything else. Yeah, so it’s about 2,800 miles, but...

Spent the next day — “Family Day” — on the base at Ft. Jackson, SC.
My Soldier hadn’t eaten “real food” for weeks, so getting to chow down on some orange chicken at Panda Express in the PX was heaven for him.
Ran some on-base errands, then went over to the bowling alley with some of his buddies and I forked out the cash so we could all bowl for an hour.
They’ve a military museum on base with exhibits of what troops were equipped with in the past. Looking at how rudimentary the guys had it “back when,” even as late as Korea, the boys kinda got their eyes opened to how good they’ve got it with the more modern equipment they are issued now.

Next day’s Graduation was a spectacle, complete with Pass In Review with all the fresh-minted troops in their dress greens.
Went to the barracks, hauled out all my son’s gear, he signed out, took his orders from the Drill Sergeant, and we left.
Made an obligatory visit to Waffle House, then off across South Carolina to Myrtle Beach — Beverly Hills on the Sand.
Stayed the night up in New Bern, NC — the Birthplace of Pepsi, as we discovered riving through the downtown the next morning.

Had lunch out at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks.
The beach up there is SSOOO gorgeous; the sand is like silk.
Then up to Newport News to Ft. Eustis where we unloaded his 150lbs of gear, and he reported in.
I drove on out to Strasburg, VA to stay the night with friends. We had a great time together.

Left mid-morning and drove across the stunning forested mountains of Appalachia to Parkersburg, WV where I visited the memorial to my great-great-great grandfather who fought in The Revolutionary War. He lived to be 97; died in 1851.
The site is on an historic cattle farm that’s a century old, and the people were very gracious; they’d NEVER had a direct descendant visit, before.

I was into my Family Search the other day and saw where someone had found records to tie my family back to Dingel, County Kerry, Ireland 17 generations back to 1403.
The family emigrated to the Virginia Colony in the early 1600’s.
I’d heard growing up that the family hailed from Virginia, and was probably Irish, but hadn’t any real proof until very recently, so it’s cool that rumor has been substantiated like that.
That visit was a powerful experience; I could feel the weight of history in the very air and soil.
I drove most of the way back to Charlotte that evening just so I wouldn’t have far to go the next day.
That was a good idea, because it enabled me to sleep in so I wouldn’t have such a long day flying back.

I got into Charlotte after lunch and ran across some guys with their classic cars in a parking lot.
Turns out El Puro Cuban restaurant on South Blvd. had a promo event happening, and these guys had cruised in for it. So I pulled in and had a great social time with them for a couple hours.

There were three BEAUTIFUL “tri-five” Chevy BelAires out there, a ‘67 Challenger R/T that this one guy drives almost daily, an A/C Cobra; one guy brought out his Lamborghini, there was a ‘66 Malibu with an obvious something potent under the hood, a ‘66 Chevy C10 pickup in daily driving condition, and an absolute land yacht of a ‘73 Cadillac Sedan DeVille this younger guy had just begun working on.

“Wayne” from Network Security at Bank of America HQ just about sold me on Charlotte. I am impressed that — despite having such a large “footprint” — the city beyond the actual downtown retains the feel of living in a fairly relaxed suburb. After that I grabbed a bite, topped the tank on my rental over at the Costco (only $3.18/gallon !!!) then drove to the airport to relax with a book.

I’m somewhat dreading adding up the total damage from the trip, but I have to say it was a really good time. As I had it planned originally, I’d have had more time traveling with my son, but — Army, so the plan changed so we only got about 30 hours, and I was a bit pressed to make the most of it. He’s coming for Christmas, though, so I can’t complain.

Oh, thank you so much for so much detail about your trip! And congratulations to your son for graduating!

And yes, T-c provides very warm visits and I agree about the neighborly feel you get around her and her family.

I would be interested in your family tree ancestors from VA because I have some from there as well. Not sure now where young John Howland was from originally, (I just have to pull up the program I had re-filed about an hour ago) but thanks to him, I’m here! Along with millions of cousins.

I was just going through some of my own genealogy today, and recalled a grandfather who was killed in the War of 1812, one killed in the French and Indian War and several others killed in various wars before and after. It’s only as I age that I realize the enormity of their sacrifice.

The car show sounds great, even if it wasn’t pre-planned. Sometimes, those are the best!

Yes, the army tries to send everyone home that they can at Christmas or Thanksgiving, leaving those with critical MOSs to man the guns so to speak. I wish him the best of luck for his future.

Thanks again! That must have been enjoyable!!

Excellent report! It’s not at all unusual around here for classic cars to turn up and owners to hang around, even in the Food Lion parking lot.

What was that name of the entity you contacted for your in-laws about an overpayment of premiums?

I need to contact someone about this Walgreen’s theft amount — someone who can build a fire under their backsides, because that $500+ could do a lot for my Bug-Out fund.

You’re welcome. The universe provides all the kitten pictures everyone needs!

Everyone is fine here. I exchanged texts with Elen, USMC, last night, which was her morning. She was cheerful. James and his hair have been visiting Patrick at the apartment, but I think he’ll be home today. The Avalon is still in the shop, in spite of their saying it would be done yesterday. Sigh.

What amazing eyes!!

Good morning. Did you have a good night?

The bathroom and the water are both heating up for my shower so all I can do it wait. At least it’s not as cold out as it was — only 40°.

The rest of the day is going to depend on how I feel after the shower!
