EV runs out of juice, pushed by coal miners
DC tourist ran out of battery in the middle of a remote West Virginia road on Friday, near a coal mine on Mettiki Coal access road U.S. 48, a few miles outside of Davis, according to WTRF.
From FaceBook:
Randy Smith on Friday Some days are just better than others. Today at our mine off Corridor H an electric car from DC ran out of battery at the road entrance to the mine. Someone called one of our foreman and told him a car was broke down in the middle of our haul road. He went to investigate and found out they had indeed ran out of juice coming from DC to Davis for a get away weekend. He then went back to the mine and got guys to push the car to the guard shack so they could plug in to charge. ... See more

Oh, yah, like CA did?
CA is banning itself into non-existence. No one wants to live there, so there goes the tax base! LOL! I’m SO glad I moved out in the early 90s, after the Rodney King riots.
Interesting, although there’s less there, there than their topic sentences claim. Their main point of evidence that “plastic is not recyclable” is that plastic is not being recycled.
The practical and economic barriers to recycling plastic are high, no question about that. There are a lot of reasons that using fewer disposable plastic articles would be good, including what comes in the packages, like sodas and stuff that we were all better off when we didn’t have them.
The article doesn’t go into detail on the specific environmental harm of recycling plastic. The most obvious point is that any industrial process uses energy, produces emissions, and generates waste. The question then becomes, “Compared to what?”
Wow. OK.
New inventions, it would seem, always have a trade-off of some kind, no matter what it is.
Apropos of nothing, the Wi-Fi company I use is now charging me $10 a month for the router.
"The Greenpeace report offers a wealth of statistics and an admirably succinct diagnosis: 'Mechanical and chemical recycling of plastic waste has largely failed and will always fail because plastic waste is: (1) extremely difficult to collect, (2) virtually impossible to sort for recycling, (3) environmentally harmful to reprocess, (4) often made of and contaminated by toxic materials, and (5) not economical to recycle.'" (Emphasis mine).
The follow-up is based on the economic issues that lead to environmental issues:
"The environmental price has also been high because the plastic in American recycling bins has gone to developing countries with primitive waste-handling systems. Much of it ends up illegally dumped, burned (spewing toxic fumes) or reprocessed at rudimentary facilities that leak some of the plastics into rivers."

When they try to charge me monthly, I buy my own. The downside is I’ve recycled a few.
I’ve had routers, but this is a first for me. They changed their name a couple of months ago, evidently being bought out by another (larger, greedier) company, so in addition to bombarding me weekly to buy a cellphone from them, they aren’t happy that I don’t subscribe to all the channels they offer me. I don’t even like paying for the use of the airwaves so why would I want a cellphone?
Just corporate greed. They can’t take it with them, no matter how long they live, and their descendants won’t be able to take it either. To my knowledge, money isn’t necessary on the Other Side, nor is CryptoCoin.
Did you, perhaps, have a special promotional deal for the first 12 or 24 months during which said router was free?
I see that COMMONLY.
I had a promo for 12 months, and my monthly went up when it expired. It’s a bummer, but one thing many ISPs will do is — if you call and squeak at them — they’ll find out what current promotional deal you may qualify for, and apply it to your account. Part and parcel with that, they’ll ask if you want to upgrade to a higher-level service, and that might make great sense if they’ve restructured their menu and have an upgraded service that’s on promo at a lower rate. Several times my ISP has waived the typical “new customers only” clause, and set me up with the better deal.
That was Astound/WAVE Broadband, BTW. Your mileage may vary.
I remember talking to the customer service specialist at Spectrum and saying, “You charging more for a router means you think a router is optional. That tells me you’re a 20th century company trying to operate in the 21st century. Should I look for a company that understands the times?”
She asked me what I meant.
I asked her, “How many people do you know who have a computer wired to the Internet?”
She said she didn’t know any. She didn’t even have a computer herself. She only used her phone.
I said, “So you admit that any company that thinks living without wireless is possible isn’t living in the 21st century. Do you realize what this tells me about your company?”
Eventually I just bought my own router.
Been there.
Done that.
Just make sure all your hardware downstream of the Gateway is the same brand. It shouldn’t matter, but IT pros will tell you — basis painful experience — it matters.
I went Netgear, behind my Gateway and had decent results, but it DOES mean more hands-on management, so it’s not a solution for folks who really don’t wanna “get their hands dirty” with those technicalities.
No. I checked with my son who has been in this area for 20+ years, and he has the same company, but has never paid for the router, which is why I signed up for it.
Once the company changed hands, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and it did, because I’m low-income. He isn’t, so he probably pays three times what I do for monthly service, if not more.
He would probably not be affected, anyway. I’ll have to ask him if his rates went up. Meantime, I’ll make plans to call them next week, but I went ahead and paid because I need the Interwebs.
I have to be very careful when I call people because CFIDS is so unpredictable. I can go into a series of mood swings that I have absolutely no control over, and have to hang up.
So If I haven’t rehearsed what I’m going to say, along with any possible answers they could give, I might be cutting my own throat.
It’s best if I’m just super cautious and polite and get the info then write everything down to make sure I have it, read it back to them, make sure I have their name(s) and go on from there.
Good morning, Wordlers!
I should have gone with the first word I thought of, once I had a couple of letters. I’m guilty of over-thinking.
So, here it is.

Kitteh looks like he’s more ready for games than I am to start my day.
Good morning. I hope you had a good night, with no alarums or excursions.
I’m going to shower, then write to Charlie and maybe someone else, and then lick my wounds from yesterday.
The weather report says “severe weather today, with high winds and possible tornados.” Am I still here? I’m too old for this stuff.
I need to be back in the valley between the mountains where the worst that can happen is an earthquake!
Not too bad, thanks. I’m getting organized for the campout. No kittehs on Saturday or Sunday morning! It’s supposed to be really nice weather, and I’ll sleep with only Kathleen, who isn’t a nuisance at night.
Good Friday Morning!
Back on the four train for me today... no complaints on this one...

Good morning! I hope you have a great weekend!
I’m glad you’re going to have at least one night with no sleeping nuisance.
I’ll take care of the kittehs for the weekend. I mean, it’s the least I can do!
Now, I’m off to the shower so I can warm up!
I think a bunch of us will be on the Four-Word Letter or something!
Good job!
