A lot more "fall" than rise.

The Vikings didn’t disappear, they took over most of Europe. Most don’t know this but the Germans were a tribe that originated in southern Sweden before they went south and eventually conquered Rome. Following the Germans came the Vikings. They took over all of Europe and ruled it as royal dynasties up until World War I.

Viking is a verb, not a noun.

You're right of course, no Viking helmet has ever been found with horns. Wasn't that from Wagner's opera or something?

I read recently (How the West Won, by Rodney Stark) that the Vikings occupied Ukraine for 600 years and named the city of Kiev. Quite surprising to learn how expansive their influence was.

The Vikings were the “founders” of the country, bringing all of the various tribes under one rule. There is a statue in Kiev of the Vikings honoring them as the founders. I was surprised when I learned that.
That was back when there were the riots and fighting in Kiev for a change in government, and they would gather in the main square and I saw the statue. “Hey - those guys look like Vikings!” Which led me down the interweb rabbit hole.

The Vikings didn’t disappear, they took over most of Europe. And England. The Vikings became the British aristocracy.
Some Vikings settled in Northern France, and became known as the Norman ("North Men"). In 1066, they invade the British Isles and conquer it.
